Symbio is certainly growing. They now have tassie devils, red pandas, meerkats and now a species of marmoset.

These twin marmosets are some of the smallest monkeys in the world, but their antics attracted bumper crowds at their new Stanwell Tops home yesterday. Born six months ago at a Brisbane wildlife park, the brothers were flown south on Thursday to begin their new life at Symbio Wildlife Gardens. "Initially they were a little bit cautious. I stayed here with a pizza (on Thursday night) until they went to bed," Symbio's operations manager Matthew Radnidge said. "But now they know a couple of us, they were jumping on us this morning." The pocket-sized primates are native to Brazil, but Mr Radnidge said widespread land clearing in that country had threatened the species. "We plan to specialise in small primates because, primarily in South America and Asia where a lot of these animals come from, habitat destruction is rife. It's important for us to look after our Australian animals as well as the wildlife of the world," he said. Symbio is planning a competition to name the pair, while the wildlife park will purchase more of the species next year. Then there might be monkey business of a different nature. "They won't become sexually mature until they're about two years of age. We will get some females and do our bit to try to keep their numbers up," Mr Radnidge said. Symbio looks to be powerng ahead and may soon be another Mogo. |

I live a couple of towns south of Symbio. I havent been there for a few years. I seen the article in the local paper. I think they were common marmosets.

I know this thread started a while ago, but if you didn't get an answer perhaps I can help. The spider monkeys have been at Symbio for at least 10 years and as far as I know, they came from a private collection, not WPZ. They now have cotton-top tamarins there as well, but you might already know this

they did indeed come from a private collection, they are two aged males. they traded 1.1.2 pig tailed macaques and a difference for the two spider monkeys, this was before the new owners of the park. they traded them in because they were very vocal, agressive and theier old enclousure was small and not up to standards. the spider monkey exhibit was constructed for them and the macaque exhibit was demolished. hope this helped...
