Taronga Update

on friday I braved the pouring rain and trekked off to taronga....despite the downpour had a fantastic couple of hours wandering around....highlights-
~an 11 week old male fennec fox, hand raised by keepers is being reintroduced to his mother ~the pygmy hippo breeding program may be underway. the male is visibly 'turned on' by the female, in a backward kinda way! the two animals are in the old malayan tapir enclosure ~as Boof said in an earlier post, the Moore Park aviary is open again, and is being used to display a range of species including a mix of tree shrew and squirrel ~big work on Gung's facility is underway, alot of excavation ~champions of regional diversity may be wearing black with what could be the passing of the regions' last Muellers Gibbon. Mary, the 40 something spinster was nowhere to be seen and her moat drained. perhaps renos or something, or perhaps she kicked the bucket ~elephants going well, of course. foot xrays, browse, scatter feeding and swimming seem to keep them pretty busy ~fishing cat back on display in the Cats of Asia precinct. have not seen them there since the early 1990s ~baby gorilla thriving ~no seal show on now, as relocation to GSO continues ~no emporer tamarins on display ~tree kangaroo pair in together ~the snow leopard cubs (with retarded looking eyes) still in with mum ~no exciting francois langur births, or silvery gibbons. fingers crossed ************************************* MINOR GRIPES ~im going to harp on about Backyard to Bush. for $11 million i would like to see a few more animals, such as some more kangaroos or wallaby. ~im also going to be critical of some misleading wording....in the visitor information leaflet the zoos has declared it union of the Pygmy Hippo as the only viable pairing of this animal in the country. untrue. also, the hopes of this species surviving in the wild does not pin upon this particular program. this sort of rhetoric bores me and risks undermining the value of the really important conservation work the zoo does. ~the elephant toy box, containing paint brushes, harmonicas etc is an important enrichment tool. but it doesnt stimulate natural behaviours. elephants dont paint in the wild. or play harmonicas. ~finally. the food. considering it only costs $37 to get into the zoo, which is worth it, the $8.90 baguette seems a bit steep. the food needs to be improved upon and made more affordable for families! Only $37 to get into the zoo? Practically anywhere in either Canada or the U.S. zoo admission prices are generally around $15 - $20 for an adult. The San Diego Zoo/Animal Park/Seaworld trifecta is pricey, but anywhere else it's $15-20. At Taronga one has to also shell out money for the ferry, so therefore the zoo is bloody expensive!

You can buy a ticket that includes ferries... I think its $44...
Thanks for updates Glyn sounds like much has changed since just last Sep when I was there..! Boy you can type legibly when boozed..!

dont worry glyn Mary is still around they just have work to do in the moat etc... i freaked out when she wasnt there too!!

Gung is getting a flashy new exhibit to go with the one that opened with the female asian elephants. I seem to recall that it will be finished this year, but definitely after the grand opening of Great Southern Oceans.

Yes Jimmy, He was one of Five imported to Taronga zoo, four are females, he is a little young yet but the signs are good so far.

Gung is one randy young elephant!
As his keeper Lucy Melo rather delicately puts it (in today's newspaper), "...Gung has been very busy practising his breeding skills." When it comes to having a baby elephant, we're gonna beat Melbourne! (Waits for explosion from patrick!) |

yes i can type legibly when drunk, but im sporting a massive dancing injurt right now. forum members, never get dragged down by a titanic sized lay when youve had 4 bottles of wine. it hurts, and ive got the brusied leg as proof.
yeh torie i gotta say i did freak out that mary was dead. i think she has been there for soooooooooo long i took her for granted. she is such a beautiful animal considering her age, although in the future i think her exhibit would be better as a swimming hole for otters, tapirs and Gung. dreams. im hoping Gungs enclosure doesnt take too long to build, it wont be anywhere near as complex as the main Wild Asia exhibit. disappointed that the Temple is closed for now, and hoping they reopen it as a future feature of his enclosure. was very interesting being inside the temple. on the admission price i still reckon its good value for money. dollar for dollar, theres more entertainment in a day at Taronga than most other zoos i think. it is a whole day zoo, and has the keeper talks, feeds and shows to beef it up. another interesting thing i found, was that the elephant enclosure seems to have 'stabilised' after looking slightly traumitised for most of last year. i guess the surviving palms and other trees should now make it...... and i think thats the wrap |
