just found that out that taronga's eldest female elephant Pornthip is pregnant after ebing inseminated with semen frozen from Heman, who died recently at western plains zoo.

I didn't believe it for a second, becuase I know better than that, but I was about to post a reply saying that you got your facts wrong!

They can't even keep elephant semen viable for an eight hour trip from Dubbo to Perth, let alone frozen for a month or more - dream on!!

i have a serious question. chimpanzees are listed as a viable species in the region, but long-term which institutions will hold chimps, in what capacity? what is the lineage and degree of relatedness to each group relative to the region as a whole, and when was the last time a chimp was imported and integrated into the Australasian region?
im expecting wellingotn and taronga to be relatively related but would be interested to hear what info we can all come up with collectively. personally im sick of talking about elephants and globe-trotting gorillas. lol ;)

I'd have to drag a couple of documents out for all the details, and I've got brain drain right now. Have been working on the pc most of the day. I'll give you some answers tomorrow, I promise!

ok mate, thank you. the only reason why i ask is because for the othe two great ape species we all could pull anecdotal info out of our arses about the latest import of orang and gorilla, who is related etc. but chimps have kind of slippe dunder the radar.
finally, what is melbourne zoos long-term level of involvement, if any, going to be with this species???
