The seal pools being turned into water fountains is beyond a joke in my opinion, and it is essentially a huge amount of wasted space. Many zoos have tiny fountains that are pretty to look at and add to the ambience of the establishment, but at Taronga the fountains are now massive and an animal exhibit has been replaced with nothing. Also, the elephant barn looks like Federation Square in Melbourne!
In a zoo that has a propensity for over-using mock rock and some pretty ugly buildings this one certainly takes the cake!! IMHO probably one of the most ugly zoo structures I have seen. Maybe a new thread on the ugliest buildings at zoos around the world? This would have to rate highly.
Scary to think though that this is a brand new, modern and undoubtably hugely expensive building and it is the best that they can come up with.
hmmmm, im not a huge fan of it so far, though it is unfinished and is supposed to have plants growing from some sections of the wall. hope it breaks it up a little, i know they were supposed to build something which would blend into the bush if seen from the harbour but jeez, this looks interesting.
as for the fountains i dont mind. they'll keep the water circulating and add a bit of interest, and the zoo wont need to salt the water to keep it from going green
