The Associated Press: Panda in China zoo bites student who wanted a hug

Another article that shows just how stupid a zoo visitor can be.

Its now been proved: People are stupid

Poor panda. He is simply too cute. All people want to hug him.

This reminds me of another panda-related story I heard a few years back: Apparently a journalist wanted to get good photos of some pandas in a zoo. He didn't think they would be dangerous at all so he jumped in to the enclosure of one of them and walked up to it. The panda then struck out against the man, hitting him just bellow the waist. He survived, but to put it mildly, he lost his manhood that day

It's a shame he wasn't under the impression that lions are cute and would appreciate a hug

snowleopard's link is no longer available so I don't know if the following is connected but...
Panda with attitude bites zoo trespasser - Yahoo! News
Quote:
A panda with a record of aggressive behaviour attacked a man who jumped into its enclosure at a Beijing zoo to pick up a toy, local media said on Thursday.
The nine-year-old panda, Gugu, bit the man on his legs but was driven away by a zoo worker brandishing a broom, the Beijing Youth Daily said.
The man, who jumped into the enclosure to retrieve a toy dropped by a child, was taken to hospital and given a rabies shot, but his injuries were light, the report said.
This was not the first time Gugu has bitten somebody.
Twice before he has attacked people who climbed in to his cage, one of whom was drunk and the other who was simply curious, the newspaper added.
funny how the panda has "a record of aggressive behaviour" because he has three times had a go at people who climbed into HIS territory!

A panda is cute but cannot kill you. Maul badly maybe, but not kill. The funny thing is that a polar bear is also cute but it can kill you. The director of a zoo here in Iceland that operated between 1968 and 1986 commented in his book on the sweet and innocent look of his two polar bears, one of them a huge male, and how often he witnessed people reaching their hands towards them for a touch. This was a problem when they were young and just arrived, and then being housed in a rather shallow former common seal pool, but after they built a deeper pit for them, it was less of a problem. No one ever got hurt, but one of the lions once almost tore the arm of a slightly drunk woman who put her hands through the bars in order to pet the animal. She just found the lion looking so innocent. It was her fortune that the lions had just been fed so they were not hungry.

The lion occurrence around 1980, and the Icelandic media brought it up again in 2004 when the keeper who responded to the incident and nursed the drunk woman until the ambulance arrived, was charged with first degree murder of his wife, although by 2004 the zoo had long since closed and the guy was working as carpenter. He is now doing 16 years, which is the maximum sentence for murder in Iceland (we are soft, I admit) but at the time of the trial you would see catchy headlines like "Once keeping lions behind bars, now himself behind bars" ...

of course a panda could kill a person if it wanted to, same as any other bear

Well I guess I could have skipped this sentence, after all a panda is a bear, so you're right.
