Whilst I was travelling down through Malaysia I made a point of visiting the Taiping Zoo and Night Safari. I was not quite sure what to expect of my visit. I get a lot of private emails and photographs from people and I had heard some rather derogatory remarks about this collection. To my surprise it was amongst the best collections I have visited anywhere. I would urge people who have the chance to visit to do so especially as the collection is now expanding.

    Hi Peter,

A nice review about Taiping, yesterday I read you hubpage about the "Taiping Four" is interesting too.

I know is a litle off topic, for me it was big mistake sending tihs 4 gorillas back to Cameroon.

How many are alive 1 or 2 ?

    Cheers,

    Eduardo

To be honest Eduardo I don't know what the current state of play is with survivors. I too believe it would have been better to have kept the Gorillas in South Africa.

Matang has gave birth to a female calf on October 30th named Mas.

The calf is inbred. As the father is Setia and Setia is also Matang's father.

I see your link no longer shows the article because it has been unpublished by Hubpages. They are a royal pain in the neck. I tried joining a couple months ago, published two cat articles, and they removed both of them due to copyright infringement on the photographs. But they were my photos, yet they removed them because I put my name and copyright on top to protect the images. They will not let you post protected images yet they will also not let you protect your own images. So I have given up on Hubpages and I see now Peter Dickinson who is a prolific contributor is having trouble with them too. Much easier to just post reviews and photos on ZooChat!

    New Births 2011

these are the latest articles about newly born Asian elephant in 2011 and African lion cubs in 2010 in Taiping Zoo & Night Safari...

Mas the latest jumbo darling at zoo

Taiping Zoo welcomes four lion cubs

There is also another births of five lion cubs on 26th October 2011. They were born to a female lion named Nyanga (born in 2006) which added the total number of lions in the zoo to 18. There was no article about this birth in internet as I know. Its only in Malay Language.

    Just saying,

The elephant database only lists 8 elephants at the zoo whilst
Mas the latest jumbo darling at zoo mentions a calf Kelian

Does anyone know about this calf.
Also just randomnly, if we include this calf. Setia has sired 6 female calves.

Actually, a welcome feature article making the case for both ex situ captive-breeding, PR and awareness the species exist rather tenuously in the wild and needs in situ conservation measures and research.

BTW: Taiping has a pack of 2.5 (starting with 1.1 wild caught from Terrenganu state via Melaka Zoo). Melaka Zoo is the other holding facility. The Taiping Zoo director would like to set up a statewide captive-breeding program.

Aside, Taiping Zoo is the current studbook keeper for Malayan tiger!

A Facebook post says they are Spectral Tarsiers (rather than Horsfield's Tarsiers of Borneo), and also that they now have Golden-headed Lion Tamarins. Both are said to be species not kept by the zoo before.

This may sound stupid but regarding their Asian elephant breeding program, since 2011 calves have been inbred (father, daughter mating's) why not move Setia on to another facility ex; Singapore night Safari, and welcome young bull Sang Wira (Chawang x Sri Nandong) from the Singapore night Safari to be the new breeding bull to mate with Matang, Selama, Taiping, Mas, and perhaps Jaya.
