happy birthday to Sooty Mangabey, named after a cercopithecid but with a hyaenid as his avatar for some reason.....

I was trying to think of some pun including the word "sweep" but couldn't.



Tomorrow there will be another birthday thread for.....wait and see

If I can be self-indulgent for a second (and if you can't be self-indulgent on your birthday, then when can you be?) - I do think there's something vaguely absurd about a (as of today) 42 year-old man hiding behind an animal-related pseudonym. However, as a teacher I am wary of leaving my 'real' name in cyberspace (I'm sure my students are desperate to discover my thoughts on Antwerp Zoo); therefore, when I signed up, I chose the name of an animal with which I had enjoyed working when I did work in a zoo. However, I didn't have a picture of a sooty mangabey, and had to 'borrow' one from Google. When an argument (friendly, I hope) about keeping aardwolves was aired on Zoochat, I thought the time had come to nail my Proteles cristata to the mast....

I realised last night that I am named after a tern but have an otter as my avatar, so I shouldn't talk

I'm Bongorob and have penguins. Zoogiraffe has a lizard. Javan Rhino an owl.
azcheetah2 a tiger, while tiger tiger has a penguin and Tiger Valley a bear.
This strange theme is pretty common.

Some people do have matching avatars, such as Chester Gemsbok, Bongo and Gentle Lemur. Obviously, they know how to do it properly.
