Call me a cynic but one wonders how much gold was needed to pay for that accreditation. I have never visited, but based on impressions online there seem to be so much better zoos in the UAE...
I'm not seeing any red flags on their website aside from white tigers, and even then the website correctly points out that this is not how they appear in the wild instead of going the obnoxious "rare and mysterious" route most white tiger facilities do. It was the third ever AZA accreditation to be achieved through the Pathway Towards Membership Program (after Marineland and Columbus Zoo). This place is what we call a "curate`s egg" in the UK, ie good and also bad. The newer part comprising mainly large carnivores(and the lone female Asian Elephant) is fine,parts of the older,original zoo are still very shabby and I`m very surprised,actually amazed, that the facility could meet AZA`s accreditation criteria. I did the old part first and,at the very beginning,thought I had ended up in some Third World dump...but it did significantly improve later.
