The park is searching for a new pair of Asian lions, wnat to exchange them for Rusty-spotted cats : 2 rusty spotted cats for 2 Asiatic lions: Zoos not interested in Borivli national park’s offer
Once more, a rather sobering and disconcerting media report. It cannot help to establish a more favourable vision of modern day Indian zoos locally or internationally. If only, the powers that be and or CZA and Forestry Department would act to provide continuity over short term self-centred mindsets deeply ingrained in the local zoo system. The prevailing attitude and preoccupation (nay fixation) of directors (most only serve an average 3-4 years, including other senior staff) in Indian zoos with postage stamp collections rather than conservation breeding or relevance is a major hindrance to any effective ex sit program for endangered taxa under the national CZA. This same attitude provides ample ammunition to a rather vocal anti zoo community in India to criticise the ineffective and inefficient zoo community still prevailing today in most Indian accredited zoos.
