Belize Zoo has recently been hit by Hurricane Richard. Luckily, no animals were harmed, or escaped in the storm, but there has been a great deal of damage to enclosures from fallen trees. Belize Zoo is closed until further notice for repairs. They urgently need funds to assist with this. The zoo is not funded by government or other agencies, and is a haven for animals rescued from poachers and the pet trade, as well as being the last chance destination for "problem" jaguars which would otherwise be shot by farmers. The zoo also does a fantastic job educating locals about conservation - offering every Belizian child the opportunity to visit the zoo for free - so that hopefully in the future, they will not grow up to be poachers.
