Old Elephant House

The roof of the old elephant house was very low, so the elephants could climb on the roof... Found in an old animal magazine.

      Amazing photo!
What a sight that must have been as you approached but slight scary from a health and safety point of view!! Must have been a very strong roof to!!

This house was specially designed so that elephants could walk over visitors heads. One of remarkable ideas of the late director Antoni Zabinski.

It was rebuilt in 2000s and now houses Indian Rhinos, but they are not allowed on the roof anymore (danger of falling down).

Looks like a fake to me.

THe line of sight of the public and the contrast between the brightness of light on the chimney comparable rear of the elephant don't seem to be in sync. Hope l am wrong but think not.

First name of Warsaw zoo director was of course Jan. Jan Zabinski. My mistake.

I saw several photos of Asian elephants on the roof of this house, including famous calf Tuzinka born there in 1937.
