Animal news from zoo Praha
Old 07-10-2008

I thougt I could start a thread for diverse small animal news from this zoo and I hope some other local members will help me and post too.

So here we go with the latest news (seen past weekend).

Male polar bear UMCA is going to Gelsenkirchen/Germany tommorow.

Little Grebes can now be spotted in the bird house called Sīchuan.

Flamingo colony (the one next to tapirs) is breeding, despite the late season with bad weather and even temperature below zero in the night. I could count 8 chicks 0-8 weeks old, and at least half a dosen pairs still incubating eggs.

Female Polar Bear BORA is probably gravid, a cubbing den has been prepaired for her.
There are three freshly born Desmarest's Hutias in their enclosure in the upper part of the zoo, next to Bush dogs.
A Chilean Flamingo chick number 9 of this season has hatched.
There are 2 Asian Fairy Bluebird chicks in a nest, built at the top of a big stone inside of the walk-though Sichuan house, nicely visible to visitors.
A Cuban Turtle has hatched directly in an atrium of the big cats house, two Annam Leaf Turtles in an incubator.
The 9 Magpie Goose chicks hatched during this summer are still not visible to visitors.
The pair of Buffy Fish-Owls laid a first egg ever.

A new male Secretary bird arrived from Holland, itīs a mate for a female living here alone for many years.

A new reptile species is on show, a Chinese crocodile lizard, in one of these small terraria in elephant house (there were placed newly hatched crocodile tejus before).

The big vulture aviary is empty now due to a reconstruction. The animal inhabitants (european black vultures, egyptian vultures and a red kite) are now partly off-show and partly in the bateleur eagle aviary.

A caracal arrived from Berlin TP (older pic of its mate).

The pool for south african fur seals is still beeing renovated. It will take 6-9 months to coplete it, the seals are during this period off-show.

Giraffe female Sandra went to Budapest. Male Southern Three-banded Armadillo came back from France. Young male Red Panda arrived from zoo Ostrava. One sitatunga and one alpaca calf were born. 7 Rufous Beaked Snakes hatched.

Ahoj Jano
Could You write me when Prague Zoo will start building new Elephant House? Hope soon.

How does Kamba feel like? Are there any chance for baby from her? What with rest of gorilla family?

Cheers

Ahoj Irku
Iīm sorry but I donīt know when the construction of the new elephant house will start, the zoo havenīt announced it yet. But I think it could be at the end of this year.

Itīs highly unlikely Kamba could be pregnant any more, she has no cycle and zoo decided not to continue with the hormonal therapy (that led to her first pregnancy). But I think she feels good, the group is harmonic and she now plays the role of a beloved "grand-mother". She spends most of her time together with Moja (4), they even share every night one common nest. And she also works regularly as a baby-sitter for Tatu, the youngest one in the group.

News from the last weeks:

Two Rotschild-giraffe calves were born, both are females. Parents of the first one (born 1 March) are Johan (10) and Nora (10). Parents of the second one (born 8 March) are Šimon (23) and Kleopatra (17). A calf number four of this year is on the way, cow Berta (21) is due at the end of March.

Zoo imported 2,0 Dall sheep from Krefeld, Germany. Together with 0,2 imported from Leipzig, Germany last year, itīs the beginning of a new breeding herd, I hope.

A clouded leopard cub was born on 4 March. Itīs the third litter of the young pair Luzon and Buri, imported from Howletts, UK in 2006. The cat house is open as usualy, but itīs unlikely the cub will leave the wooden box for some weeks.

Does Prague still keep Fawn-breasted Bowerbird?

With both males at Berlin and Brugelette have died within the last year, this would leave 1.1 at Köln (believe 1 of their 2 males have died, as well) and 1.0 at Prague. Unless the one at Prague also has died.

A interesting group of birds and the Fawn-breasted is the only species of this family still kept in Europe, but with only 1 female remaning in all of Europe the future dont look that hopfull anyway (neither in the North America, only males remaning there).

I saw that male alive during my last visit in Prague zoo 2 weeks ago. He lives in one of those old aviaries in pheasantry, mixed with Mino dumonti, Henicophaps albifrons and Otidiphaps nobilis. Very active bird, sad to hear there is (almost) no hope for this species in european zoos.

Young male polar bear Tom (* 2007, ZOO Brno, Czech republic) has already joined Alberta, female, who is a bit older and she was born in ZOO Prague. Both bears were kept together for few hours - and then they were separated again. Alberta seemed to be afraid of Tom, but no problem occured. ZOO wants to continue with keeping them together for few hours a day... and if everything is ok, Tom and Alberta will finally share their exhibit all the time.

Bora finally gave birth to a cub, who did not survive the first night. I did not find this info her, so I add it, althought it happened 12/7/2008.

Pool for fur seals, which is being built, will be up to 230 cm deep. Plan:

I think you made a typing mistake in the date, the polar bear cub of Bora died on 11.11.2008.

A second Northern Luzon cloud rat young was born recently. I just hope itīs not yet another male - because all the youngs so far in Europe Iīm aware of (Fousek in Prague, the death and the reared young in Jihlava, and the one in Wroclaw) were/are all males.

New webcam has been launched. Cow Eliška is due within next two weeks - itīs possible to follow the birth and the first days of a Rotschildīs giraffe calf here .
