Very sad news. I suppose in practical terms this doesn't make a difference to the Northern White's (very slim) survival chances as Nesari wasn't a potential breeding animal but a great shame nonetheless.

Europe's last northern white rhino gets a friend - St. Petersburg Times

Lonely rhino gets a close companion

She's the last northern white rhinoceros on view anywhere in Europe — but zoo keepers in Dvur Kralove, Czech Republic, are hoping lonely Nabire will find solace with a southern rhino 11 years her senior. Another northern white, Nesari, died in her sleep in May, age 39. To help her cope with the loss of Nesari, keepers have teamed up Nabire, 27, with a male rhino. Natal, 38, is a southern white, another rhino subspecies. On Friday, they were seen snuggling, lazing in the sun and eating and sleeping in their enclosure. Poaching in the wilds of Africa has critically decimated the number of rhinoceri, but zoo officials say the friendship between Nabire and Natal will remain platonic. Nabire can't mate because of "pathological changes to her breeding organs," said Jiri Hruby, the curator of mammals at the zoo.
