Olomouc is one of the Zoos with the longest history of breeding 'Barbary' Lions, perhaps unbroken since they started with 'Grade 1' Lions from the 1970's selective breeding attempts at recreating the species. So they should be of good 'quality' as far as resembling Barbaries goes, even if not the real thing.

If I remember correctly, the mother of the male that Pilsen have just recieved is the female that Belfast handreared a couple of years back (her parents are ex-Port Lymphe) and then sent to one of the other Czech zoos before Olomouc took her and the male she'd be been paired up with whilst there

I think you'll find all (?) the current Barbary Lions in the UK and Northern Ireland are related in some way. PL imported a new female from Madrid in October/November. Belfast's male Lion is the offspring of ex Longleat/Newquay male 'Kabir'. Kabir has offspring at Belfast, PL/Howletts and Longleat.

Of which the Longleat ones,the females that Kabir bred with were generic zoo Lions,so the young are of no use to the Barbary Lion breeding program.

Yes, that's correct. Kabir was imported to PL from Wellington (?) to breed with PL's female(s). He had cubs with one/two of the females and then moved to Longleat. He was mixed with 0.2 generic females, daughters of the infamous Mafui. Kabir had ten to fifteen cubs before being retired to Newquay where he later died.

He has some offspring still left in the UK;

Blackpool- 1.0
Blair Drummond- 1.0
Longleat- 0.5

The rest are elsewhere in Europe, I know some where shipped to Germany and Denmark. Kabir's granddaughters, Kimya, Lunya and Nikita (All Ex Blackpool) are now at Longleat.
