Last weekend, a cornerstone for a new bird house (Rákosův pavilon) was laid, opening is sheduled for early 2016. It will be a long narrow house with two walk-through outside aviaries. Main focus is on large parrots - Lear macaw, hyazint macaw, rare caribbean amazons, palm cockatoo and Pesquet's parrot, plus other bird species mixed with them. The slope above this house will turn into vineyard. The house is being built thanks to inheritance left by a Czech private bird breeder Stanislav Rákos. New gorilla pavilion should open in late 2016. The architectonical competition is still running I think, so there is no construction activity yet. At the same time, a new visitor zoo-entrance and a snack kiosk will open in its vinicity. City hall already approved funds of roughly 4,5 mio euro. There are many other plans for future, but they were put on hold since the floods last year.
Press article: In other news, the zoo reached attendance of 1.350.000. This is comparable with year 2011, the best year in the history of this zoo.

According to the HP, zoo Prague received 2,0 king vultures from Stichting Papegaeienhulp in March 2014. More exciting are 1,2 lesser yellow-headed vultures received from TP Berlin and Olching, I quess. In other news, the zoo has been hit by falling rouble and disappearance of russian tourists, ca 100.000 less of them bought a ticket in year 2014. The final attendance figure for year 2014 is 1,38 million. A good year thanks to weather. And there is a manned wolf cub and a young eastern wallaroo freshly out of pouch. Have I mentioned a new Moloch gibbon´s pair that inhabits the former ruffed lemurs´s house? They are both young and came from Howlets and Munich.
