Rotterdam Zoo - Elephant indoor exhibit

The indoor exhibit for Asian elephants in the Taman Indah tropical house in the Asia-theme in Rotterdam Zoo. This is one of my absolute favourite elephant exhibits. Decent-sized, light, foliage around and a pool. July 2008

      you forgot to mention, concrete, tacky.....

      Concrete? Unfortunately, yes. They could do with a sand floor or even dirt if it is possible. Tacky? No, certainly not in my opinion.

      How many months of the year do they spend confined indoors?

      @zooman,

      it really depends on the weather, winters in the Netherlands are quite soft and even when there is snow elephants are aloud to go out a few hours a day. So it happens maybe 2-3 weeks per year that they can't go outside at all...

      @Anaheim & Davidbrown, Cologne may be a little bit better than Rotterdam, but the one in Amersfoort (NL), is way better than both: http://www.zoochat.com/455/new-elephant-enclosure-155599/ with lots of sand and more structure, the only thing that is missing is a pool. But in Amersfoort the elephants are not separated at night and in summer they can even stay outside at night when they want.

      @DavidBrown- If Cologne's had the foliage like here in Rotterdam, then I'm sold. The water feature is nice, but it lacks scenery in my opinion.

      @lintwotm- No offense, the exhibit doesn't really impress me. It seems considerably smaller than the other two indoor exhibits, but that just may be the angle of the photo. Like Cologne, it could use a bit more foliage. And what Cologne doesn't have in looks, it makes up with size, and a great pool for the elephants. Amersfoort has neither. Although it does have plenty of enrichment items, my opinion is that Cologne and Rotterdam are slightly better. But it's only opinion!
