There is a picture on facebook showing a pair of rock hyrax with a single young, presumably taken on the former macaque rock. http://www.facebook.com/EdinburghZooScotland
A male black stork has arrived from the Durrell wildlife conservation trust in Jersey, the bird was found injured on the island last year. Black stork down... but not out, as wayward bird finds new home in city - Scotsman.com News
I have been twice to the Zoo since I moved to Edinburgh in January and still there is no sign of development by the Monkey House where the two black and white things are supposed to live. Isn't that a bit odd in light of that some optimists say they might arrive as early as in the autumn?
I had no idea they had Bushbabies. Upon checking their website, I see that they are between the Bongos and the Red River Hogs, both of which I have seen in so many places that I'm likely to pass them without even checking if I might be missing something. Needless to say, I will have a closer look next time.
Welcome to Scotland, Baldur. I guess they will suddenly leap into action at some stage... but those 45 baboons will have to go somewhere else first.
Thank you Pertinax! True, and since Vincennes will probably only reopen in 2014 (according to a French friend of mine) they might have a problem on their hands, as to where to house this fairly large group. Nice to see something else than Hamadryas for a change though.
Chimps of Budongo. Does anyone know what is happening with the Chimps? Is the aim still to allow the newer group of pure West African chimps to breed, but not their old generic ones?
the chimps that are pure wesetern (Ricky and Louis from the original Edinburgh group and Paul, Rene, Frek (the males) and Sophie, Heleen and Lianne(the females)) are all allowed to breed. The other males have had reversible vasectomies (carried out by a surgeon who does the same op on humans) and the females are on contraceptive implants. It's all down to the chimps themselves now. Incidentally work is well under way on the panda enclosure and on the new entrance and shop!
I read on the EZ facebook that the sousliks have begun to emerge.... I shall have to get up to Edinburgh soon if this is the case, myself and my girlfriend have missed them due to the bad weather every one of our visits so far!
Thankyou for that information. Do you know why only six out of eleven of the 'new' group have been chosen to allow to breed?
Sea lions could be the next to go under the cuts Sea lions may go from Edinburgh Zoo as cash cuts hit revamp - Scotsman.com News
London Zoo has never been the same since the Sealions left- I hope Edinburgh can get around this and keep them. They make a far better exhibit than the Pandas will turn out to be, I am quite sure...
