Ah, must've been thinking of the G. murinus. Checked ISIS, and they still have them somewhere.

London Regent's Park Zoo was the only zoo in the world, who has kept four species of rhinos at the same time ! Between 1875 and 1885 they kept indian, javan, sumatran and black rhinos. ( the first white rhinos to a zoo in the world came in 1950 to Antwerp )

The old guidebooks before the second world war are full of rare animals.

"London Zoo in Old photographs: 1852-1914" is the source of my Javan Rhino info, and for anyone who doesn't have a copy, it is a fascinating book. Especially the photos of Jumbo, he looks enormous. Can you imagine a zoo nowadays allowing a mature 11ft high bull African elephant to take people for rides around the zoo!!!

In the book "Golden Days - Historic Photographs of the London Zoo" is a picture of a platypus, the photo was taken in 1928, but I coudn't find the animal in the guidebooks, so maybe it died the same year.

two interesting parrots kept at London Zoo: kakapo (six of them between 1870 and 1875, and one from 1911 to 1915). And a night parrot in 1867 which lived for four months.

Anyone have any further info on the 1928 platypus? Everything else I've read says the only ones to be kept in any overseas zoo were the various Bronx Zoo ones.

London had a yellow-eyed penguin at one time. I have a 1920 animal encyclopaedia with a very old photo of a yellow-eyed taken at the Zoo.

I expect the list of species kept at London runs into several thousand.

in 1968 the Zoo had 1527 species on display (according to a 1968 book I have), so I would hazard a guess that over the 180 years they have been open to the public the Zoo has kept, well, pretty much everything you could think of!
