Al,

When is the big day for Jothi and Vishesh to move out of Belfast Zoo to the zoo in Ostrava, Czech Republic?

So what's happening with Tina? Will she be left alone, or will she get some other non-breeding companinons?

She will be alone for a while until other animals are found! Tina is a very antisocial elephant and is currently kept separate from the other two animals anyway so i reckon she will relish the extra attention from her keepers!

It is planned to knock the front three elephant dens together to have one large area and two do the same with the two outside paddocks!

Regarding Belfast Zoo's primates. What species of langur are currently kept? Just the Francois leaf monkeys? What is happening with pregancies and birthwise in them? Will Belfast get another leaf monkey species to recoup the loss of the purple-faceds?

We currently only have 5 female francois and are awaiting a male! Our javan brown group stands at 2.3.1 the youngest being born late last year. We have quite a large group of colobus too. No langur species will be brought it to replace the purple face as the tree langaroo will take up their enclosure!

Benny the Malayan Tapir should be even happier next year. The 10 acre "Asian Tropics" opens, with rotating exhibits featuring tapirs, indian rhinos and asian elephants.

Al,

Good to learn that exchanges of endangered species intercontinental are becoming more frequent. The Denver Zoo also holds a female of the species. Do you know her age and when it is likely she will breed with Bengkulu?

Any chance that an States-born Malayan tapir can be acquired from the USA for the EEP? Another new female would do nicely (they have a huge sex skew towards females in the SSP).

So the tapirs will have an exhibit that is big enough to hold elephants. Thats a great idea especially because all three animals need similiar barriers. I heard of a zoo that rotated tapirs, tigers and orangs, i thought that would be stupid because a moat two can swim over, low fences wouldn't work for two and a netted enclosure is the only other option.

I'm sure they have done their research, but you might expect the tapirs to experience high levels of stress, as the olfactory stimulation of the scent of the tigers would be great enrichment but they'd have no prospect of avoidance, so unless they became completely desensitized to it, they be constantly exposed to the threat of danger. At least the orangs could climb to points in the enclosure where they might feel safe?

Having seen the Dama gazelles at Marwell casually sniffing at the chain link fence dividing them from the cheetahs without a single nervous movement while the cheetahs, centimetres away, appear to be excited/frustrated, maybe prey species in zoos are quite capable of judging the integrity of the barriers that protect them from nearby carnivores and it is this that governs their sense of threat, rather than the constant proximity.
