Their original male is Kakowet II, last offspring of the first San Diego pair (Kakowet & Linda). The recent infants have been fathered by Jasongo, who came from Europe, as did the females - I'm afraid I can't remember names and further details.

One of the females is 'Datou' and may have come from Stuttgart.

This group has been very successful at Twycross- in direct contrast to their gorilla achievments On one of my visits a baby Bonobo was born in the middle of the day with the female giving birth up the tree in the outside area. There was a great deal of commotion, and also much screaming from the nearby common chimps who were watching.

The only problem with Bonobos in captivity is they seem always to pluck themselves (stress/nerves?)

Yes it is. I'm not sure they've been exhibited in the UK anywhere else before- except possibly by e.g. London in the past as 'unknown' chimps.

Twycross group is about 11 strong now. They started with about 2.2. so its been very successful.

The Bonobos are one of Twycross' bigger successes, its a very good group.
Are there still a couple of young ones being handreared separately, or is the whole group together now?

And did you pick up any information on any plans regarding the Gorillas or Elephants?

Bonobos need spacious enclosures to thrive in captivity. The San Diego Wild Animal Park has a large group that has a 2 acre exhibit. It is built on a large hill, and therefore almost half of the exhibit is sloping away from zoo visitors. That feature enables the bonobos to get out of the public eye, and this has helped them with their breeding success. But pretty much every species at the Wild Animal Park has bred better than the majority of other zoos. Why is that? Space to roam.

At the San Diego Zoo there are also a group of bonobos in a decent exhibit, and there are naturally many times when animals are switched back and forth between the two organizations.

2 bonobos that were handreared - Banbo and Khaya moved to Stuttgart Zoo in 2005.
Quote from a website: "A decision by the European maintenance breeding program (EEP), was made for two young females from the British zoo Twycross to come to Stuttgart. On the 20 April 2005: "Khaya" (born at the 19.10.2001) and "Banbo" (born at the 3.9.2002) arrived at the zoo".Zoo-AG Zoopresseschau - Ausgabe 264 vom 5. Mai 2005

Does that mean the Bonobos nowadays have access to both of the indoor halls?
