Bristol's Panda's were quite active just before the zoo closes, I think they have a feeding and presentation very late in the day. This was also quite convenient for the zoo, because the enclosure is not far from the exits.

yes i saw one moving around when i was there but i agree wuld love to see them in nocturnal setting

That has seemed to have been moved to the morning, when I visited last week.

They only have the one at the moment (male).

I often see chesters panda's walking about on the ground and quite active during the day. A nocturnal exhibit would be interesting.

I think after dark they probably move much more quickly- like a badger trotting along its path- not the unhurried movements you see in daylight when they look rather sleepy.

is there any more information about the new zoo? opening date or anymore plans?

cant wait for the opening, im gonna be the first visitor throught the gates!

The opening date has been continually pushed back and if I remember rightly, Bristol don't have the funds in place yet...

im pretty sure they have started building it, because if they dont start now they wont get it done in time for 2012

In the current economic climate, I wouldn't get your hopes up for ANY large scale zoo developments to happen in the near future.

The article attached indicates that Bristol Zoo may have to fight a public enquiry just to get the transport infrastructure in place for their new zoo. Take the quoted 2010 opening date with a big pinch of salt - the words "cat" and "hell's chance" spring to mind.

yes, it is a shame that england is a total mess at the moment, if this was america it would be built in a few years time!

If it was america, we would be suffering a little more, considering the credit crunch over there is much worse than here at this moment in time.

Hopefully the UK will starve off going into a recession but if America falls the impact will be global

Zoo submits £70m park proposals

Bristol Zoo Gardens is planning a £70m world wildlife reserve to be sited in the city's outskirts.

The proposed 55 hectare National Wildlife Conservation Park (NWCP), will be the first conservation-led park in the UK.

The park has been designed to link ecosystems and conservation programmes from across the world.

Bristol Zoo Gardens director Dr Jo Gipps said once plans were submitted it had a major fundraising task ahead.

He said : "We are going to launch a campaign with organisations, corporations and rich individuals who will want to buy into this notion.

"[Visitors] stepping through the gates of the park will be transported from the normality of the [South} Gloucestershire countryside to an amazing world of wildlife," he said.

"The park will aim to make the children of today, the conservationists of tomorrow."

The NWCP will be divided into exhibit areas of Congo Tropical Forest, Sumatra Rainforest, British Ancient Woodland and Indian Ocean Coral Reef and will be home to tigers, black tip sharks, bonobos, chimpanzees and brown bears.

The first phase of the Park would be scheduled to open in 2012.

Hmmm the budget's been made bigger again.

It looks like the savannah, swamp and wetland areas have been scrapped from the plan then...

unless of course, the BBC article hasn't mentioned them.

As I thought, this project is a long way from seeing the light of day. Good luck to them with the fundraising, but I can't see £70m materialising in a hurry.

Lets hope they raise the cash, but £70 miliion in this day and age will be hard to raise.

Plus just over 3 years to open the first stage seems inlikely unless designs are well under way.
