Brstol Zoo New Monkey enclosures.

I recently saw the new Bristol Zoo Monkey enclosures for the first time. Much more roomy than the previous house, both the inside and the open outdoor enclosures. The inmates are; 1.1 De Brazza Monkey, plus baby born since their arrival at the zoo. 2.4 Lion-tailed Macaque(existing group) 1.1.1 Black Howler. There are also Ruffed and Ringtail lemurs in a walk-thru area.
The De Brazza's have not yet got access to the Gorilla Island. The hollow log connecting the two has had teething problems(it became electric due to dampness and the monkeys won't now use it) and a rope walkway will be designed instead as the monkeys' access route. It will connect to a tree in a small electricly-fenced area the Gorillas can't reach- from there the monkeys can jump onto the neighbouring trees or climbing equipment. A FAR neater arrangement than the dreadful 'fake tree' device at London Zoo.. There is also a small group of Javan Langurs in the large older concrete enclosure by the main entrance. I think perhaps they might be better swapping the Langurs for the Macaques, who are spoiling their outside exhibit. The Langurs almost certainly wouldn't do this and the Langur cage is plenty big enough for the bolder, more active Lion tailed Macaques.. |

Glad the new exhibit is good; what is the walkthrough area like?
Didn't that concrete pit cage at the entrance used to hold spider monkeys? Is that the one you mean? |

yes i agree. This enclosure is much better than the old monkey house. also just out of interest which monkey species live on the islands in the zoo.

I haven't been since August 2006, but the following live on the islands, I think.
Black Howler White-faced Saki Red Titi Squirrel Monkey. Some lemurs and marmosets may also be on the islands. |

Now that you mention it I only remember seeing howler monkeys in the old monkey house. It's my mistake. The lemur walk through was closed when I visited Bristol last year, there was a problem with the animals settling in.

Didn't Goeldi's Monkeys live with the Saki Monkeys on one of the big islands? Its a while since I've been unfortunately...

When I went in october 2007, they were still building some houses around the islands, still not sure what they are for though!
The lemur walkthrough is very nice, they switch between the ring tailed and red ruffed each day, when i went they all hid inside, its seems they are still getting used to thier new enclosure! |

According to ISIS, Bristol now have only 0.2 de Brazza. Correct or another ISIS error? They had a pair which produced a female baby, so where is the male? If he's died it may take a while to find a new one- Port Lympne is one possible source...

De Brazza and Gorillas at Bristol

The male De Brazza died from Pneumonia/unexplained death, not a water related accident as I thought it might be... A new male will arrive soon to join the two females(mother & daughter)
Young Gorilla 'Namoki' is female, not male. They only discovered this recently. |
