Chessington Zoo Developments.
Old 05-09-2007

This was mentioned in passing on another thread, in reference to their planned 'African Safari'

Does anyone have any details, such as the acreage (I believe it will be behind the newly built hotel) species planned for or a time frame for when it will all open to the public. Of course, I know they are planning a new Gorilla exhibit too and am more interested in that but I guess this will go 'hand in hand' with the other developments....

I also wondered if the existing Lions/Tigers/sealions area will remain. Or will all animals be focused into one area then?

Has anyone visited Chessington in recent months(this summer)?

I'm trying to find out if any change/extension has been made to the Gorilla enclosure, following bad publicity in the spring about the 'overcrowded' conditions of their group. The same report critisised the Lion and Tiger enclosures as being in 'a poor state of repair'....

Also, does anyone know if plans for the new 'Zoo Safari' area on undeveloped land at Chessington is definately still going ahead, and when?

Getting any certain information about this seems very difficult.

See the top of this page where I asked for information some months ago but nobody on this forum has been able to supply any. The Hotel is already built but the timeframe for the new zoo development still seems unclear.

As far as i know,

1. The gorrilas will be moved to a 5 Acre enclosure next to Creature Features
2. A african safari and education centre will be built on the old trail of kings area

this is due to happen 2009/2010

I read this on wikipedia but has since been deleted

check this news article for more info: BBC NEWS | England | London | Park warned over housing gorillas

ISIS only shows Chessington as having only 1 asiatic lion, the male. Has the new female been moved to another collection or died?

Five acres for the gorillas. Sounds good!
