To start a new thread: This years 2nd birth of a Kirks Dik Dik has taken place at Chester (a male this time) and he's being handreared alongside his older sister, Aluna. See the zoos Facebook for further details

Visited Sunday, I know it's pure speculation, but the 2 Malayan Tapirs were standing next to each other and one had a very rounded belly, compared to the other, not sure how long they have been together or what the gestation period is, so don't know if it's actually possible?

I wouldn't get to excited there should be a couple of years before they have the patter of tiny feet.

Gestation period is 395 days - so they have not been together anywhere near long enough for her to be showing even if she *were* pregnant.

Considering the species is a herbivore, and tends towards the rotund of belly at the best of times, I suspect such speculation is premature and inadvisable - particularly as the pair are both very young!

The zoo has had a first breeding of deadleaf mantis (Deroplatys dessicata).

Sorry if I said anything wrong, not knowing the species to well, and it was just a curious consideration after seeing them both together.

And as you can see, it'll probably be either zg or TLD if you're on the UK section:p

Maybe if they are successful they may be able to have some onshow in the future to better highlight the conservation efforts.

I'm not surprised the words off and show appear in an article about Chester as it's almost a given that exciting (for me at least) species are kept behind the scenes. Narrow-striped mongoose being another prime example... :p

    Or indeed Newquay :p

It's a fair point, mind you - the collection is pretty much at capacity in terms of onshow space, so anything new that comes in either has to shunt something away, or be housed offshow.

A visit to the zoo today led to me seeing what appeared to be a *very* new Congo Buffalo calf - I cannot recall hearing any news in this regard for some time, so it may have been born today or yesterday?

Chester's herd breed very well - usually several successful births each year. And very nice they are too. :)

I agree they are lovely animals. Apart from Chester it seems, there has been a reduction in, or rather a control in, breeding of this species in the UK for some time simply due to the problems of finding homes for surplus animals.
Not helped by a few zoos going out of the species in recent years ie; Whipsnade for instance.

It was there last Sunday, and was apparently born 2-3 days prior to that so nearly a couple of weeks old. Also saw a Philippine spotted deer fawn that only looked a few days old last Sunday. See attached pic, sorry it's not brill, taken on phone :)
