The 2008 collection plan file is far too large to post so here are the anticipated changes (Some have already taken place)

Is the zoo phasing out the Sacilia turtles? I hope that they don't.
Same question for the Tuatara. What does 'Management under review' mean? |

Thanks for putting them up Rob, especially the collection plan above. Shame the zoo only has 3 Gemsboks at the moment, it makes sense now why i wasnt seeing them in large numbers.

Hornbill, I think it would mean that the management of the species will be changed in an attempt to get them to breed. I doubt that they will go out of Sacalia turtles or tuatara.
Sacalia are listed as category 1b which is – Taxa that are in imminent danger of extinction (locally or globally) and are being managed in captivity as part of the recommended* conservation action. Tuatara are listed as a species for research as follows, • A species undergoing clearly defined pure or applied research that increases knowledge of natural history, population biology, taxonomy, husbandry, disease, health management etc. and are classed as category 1e - Conservation (Education) – Taxa that encourages understanding of conservation issues and people’s individual roles in them, and where possible makes direct links with in situ work, preferably the Zoo’s own. If Chester zoo is not interested in tuatara , they should put it under the export section and give them to another zoo that would want them . Theres not a huge abundance of them in Great Britain/Europe , is there ?
They are still considered rare enough in NZ that most people have only seen them in zoos |

a couple of things: - I hadn't realised the ring-tail lemur numbers had gotten so low (I know some went to Russia, but not that many) - good to notice the Sitatunga numbers are so healthy (I also never noticed the number of blackbuck and brow-antlered deer before) - I wonder why the possible import list does not mention the new Onagers and camels. - I wonder if the chimp subgroup could be heading to Edinburgh? |
