Developments at Paignton
Old 02-10-2008

Baboon Rock is going to be demolished and a new baboon exhibit will be built, on, I think, the site of the small mammal house and winter quarters which are no longer open to the public. They have to raise money for it and there's a fund raising event on 11 October. The keeper I spoke to didn't know what will replace Baboon Rock.

I'm not sure when they closed it to the public. It still holds two sorts of tamarin that you can only see in their outdoor enclosures.

New Baboon Rock.
Old 02-10-2008

That's a fairly radical development. Any timeframe? I'm wondering if they will retain the existing Hamadryas troop or replace them with Gelada Baboons which are currently rather 'in vogue.'

I hope they keep the Hamadryas though as you can't really beat them as a display. Maybe they will improve the visual perspectives for the public with a new design though.

I would still be a little surprised if they are doing it for the existing colony...

The small mammal house is opposite babboon rock isn't it? Is it the house where they used to have Mandrills (maybe just the one?)?
I'll miss babboon rock, although it never really made brilliant viewing.

It's just up the hill from the baboons and, yes, the mandrills were there.

This news worries me a little with the two most recent major devolopments, monkey heights and crocodile swamp, being unimaginative and badly designed. Hopefully it won't be a hatrick. Also, why didn't they incorporate the baboons into monkey heights - perhaps the move hadn't been envisaged back then?

very good point, maybe they need to sack their designers and get new ones!

'Monkey Heights' was built to house the stock from the old Monkey House. I do agree that though ten times better than the old house, it is an odd design for arboreal primates. I wish it could have been in an area where the monkeys could have access to trees, where they are, they can't use the big specimen plane trees because they would soon wreck them, and makes the whole thing seem very unnatural. Still, its built now....

The baboon colony would need a very large and rather different style of enclosure and its not quite so urgent anyway.

I agree that monkey heights is more for arboreal species and baboons would require a different set of habitats (unless they got geladas which like fields).

I actually quite like the current baboon enclosure, it's big and more enriching than most. What they should do is fill in the dry moat surronding the rock and replace it with windows for better viewing which would effectively double the rock's size. Also, the behind-the-scenes facilities could do with improvement.

On the subject of monkey heights, the designers should be thrown in with the baboons! OK, maybe that's a little extreme but it really is a stupid design. Why do the people look down on the monkeys? Why are there so few climbing structures and why didn't they build it in an area with trees! I agree that it is a vast improvement on the old monkey house but it could be so much better. When they built the enclosure for barbary sheep they built it around a real cliff-face, why couldn't they have put the monkeys in a more natural setting. Having said that, i like the indoor areas and the diana monkeys have bred successfully ???three??? times now.

Anyway thats enough ranting for one thread!
