The news get worse from Twycross, 3 keepers have been sacked after allegedly beating "TONZI", one of the zoo's Asian elephants with bamboo canes.
The keepers have been arrested and questioned.
Grim reading, can the zoo really recover in the eyes of zoochatter and the public at large.

Not brilliant news is it?! :( Very sad to see a once great zoo demise (mostly due to poor management in recent years by all accounts).

I wander how experienced these keepers were with handling elephants, and how long this may have gone on for. I do not understand for the life of me why you would want to work with animals then show a complete lack of care and respect for their welfare.

About the only positive that can be drawn from this is the fact the zoo sacked the accused staff immediately.

Hopefully the only way is up for the zoo, but have been thinking that for the past few yaers now

This hits the nail on the head, and the World Primate Penitentiary (check out those outdated enclosures) lurches into the abyss. Hopefully the "keepers" will be prosecuted for their actions.

    Oh no!

    This is bad. Very bad!
On the same day that Aspinall announces he is sending more Gorillas (a whole family group) back to the African Continent, Twycross has this news!
However, weeks after the filth rag 'The Sun' was again proved wrong for its hateful and disgusting take on the Hillsborough disaster, should we believe anything that comes out of it? I felt compromised opening a link to this red-top.
This case, if true, will remind people of the bad old UK circus days.
The zoo needs a good corporate health check. Maybe hiring a team to come in and 'save' the institution.
Maybe we (zoo chatters) that really care could come up with a joint open letter to the management? Maybe we could publish in the local press? We could tactfully suggest what needs to be done with sensible and realistic suggestions and maybe offer some voluntary hours to help implement some changes - actually get our hands dirty and help?
It's not too late, but if i wake up to more of this kind of news I can't see Twycross surviving.

personally I'd want to wait and see what else comes out about this. The keepers were supposedly fired over this so it does sound serious, but on the other hand The Sun is a scandal rag so everything they write is going to be sensationalist.

But of course whatever the truth the damage has already been done by The Sun, and the zoo will undoubtably lose custom because of it.

I think this incident occurred several weeks ago and was carried on the local T.V news. Somehow its now got into the wider public domain :( Its been on Radio 2 news also so major channels are carrying this story. The zoo really doesn't need this though.

It's now on their facebook feed, so there is no hiding the fact that it is true.
It should be an honour to work with animals not abuse them, hope they get what they deserve and are named and shamed.

Let's not forget (for legal reasons, if no other), being arrested is not the same as being charged which, in turn, is not the same as being found guilty.

Full facts and evidence (not a report in a tabloid paper) need to be considered before concluding on the matter.

I'm not saying the allegations did or didn't happen to the extent reported (I don't know) just that people have been accused of things (after being arrested) in newspapers before and lives and reputations ruined unnecessarily before the law and due process has been allowed to run its course.

OK Shorts, if the CCTV camera's dont lie and they have their day in court they will then be named and shamed, but as you point out they have to get to that stage first.

Since I was a litle boy for as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a zookeeper and work with animals. So to hear about three keepers at Twycross zoo having been sacked for hitting and mistreating the Elephants at the zoo these people who in my opinion are in such a privileged position to work with amazing animals on a daily basis completely sickens and saddens me. I hope the full weight of the law will be brought against the three men involved.

If the Keepers are found to be guilty of what they are accused of doing,I hope they are hit with the full weight of the law,and if they are found not guilty I also hope that all those on here that have all ready locked them up and thrown away the keys, are big enough to say a very big sorry to them.As always there is a lot more going on at Twycross than we realise,so please let the police do their job before we jump to conclusions!!

Twycross could certainly do without this .

Wonder if they will be able to make further attempts at A.I. now that elephants are managed under PC .

The story has just been featured on Central News.

As for me I can only make comments on what I read and see because I do not know all the behind the sceens news, so I can only say it really does not look good.

Again, well said, could be on dangerous ground if fingers started to get pointed.

Why are we on dangerous ground? It's been in papers, tv and on the Tywcross facebook page. Nobodys name has been mentioned even Tywcross have handed the details to the police (Central TV), so what's the deal.

It's certainly not a witch hunt against Twycross from me I have no axe to grind with them, but as has been stated lets see what any investigation brings up.
