yeh she used to be kept with a male who suffocated on a child's toy a few years ago, I don't think she's ever bred though, but could be wrong

Yes, I think his name was Barney, and he was born at Whipsnade.
I think the young one called Minty (who did the foxes glacier thing) got sent to Antwerp, which apparently had appalling conditions for the polar bears, much to the disgust of born free and that :-S

The situation in Wolong sounds dreadful: loss of habitat, wild pandas found dead, total destruction of the breeding centre.

Can you elaborate about the breeding centre?

From the reports I've read it sounds as though the research centre and panda hospital were destroyed. According to the Chinese press 14 of the 31 panda enclosures were destroyed leaving 61 pandas "homeless". Some have been evacuated, not clear what has happened to the others.

Meanwhile there's a plan forming to rebuild the centre in a new location:

I hope the remainders are kept in a tundra habitat with lots of space and grass.

My favourite Giant Panda exhibit (from photos) is either San Diego Zoo or the National Zoo in Washington...

I'm assuming the ones in Berlin and Hong Kong are quite good..? What about Atlanta..?

Berlin's is just a simple cage in the rather out-dated (but wonderful) carnivore house. The panda seems to get very little special attention. The Madagascan mongooses next door are possibly more interesting, in many ways. It's reminiscent of how London used to present their pandas - nothing special, just a cage which would contain something else if the panda wasn't there.

The Giant Panda exhibit in Thailand (can't remember if Bangkok or somewhere else,) has an air conditioned house with Pandas in a center of Bambbo planted in the ground, from photos I think it looks great, though the rest is kind of hard to explain,

Yeah, I don't like the way the panda is presented in Berlin. It's a really small, exposed area, poor old guy can't get any privacy.
You'd think an animal that costs so much for the zoo to keep would be advertised more and get a much higher profile exhibit.
