Giraffe and Elephant House
Old 10-09-2008

At last - a female Rothschild Giraffe has arrived! It looks like love at first sight with the male, Yoda. They can touch over a barrier but are not yet together. Another female will be arriving from the Czech republic next week.

I haven't forgotten my quest to discover the contingency plans if one of the elephants dies. I just haven't come across the appropriate keeper yet.

The second female giraffe has arrived. I couldn't see her as the house was closed, but no doubt the zoo will be issuing a press release soon.

Good news, I gather this means blue tongue restriction are not as bad at the moment?

I guess so, unless they found some way round them.

I saw the newest female giraffe today - she is from Germany and is smaller than the one from the Czech Republic, though they are both 3 years old. They are staying indoors with Yoda while they get used to each other.

Good news on the Giraffe front. I hope the house is absolutely safe now as that was a real tragedy with the previous ones.

If I remember rightly, inside the house don't the public look DOWN onto the giraffes? I always thought that was a rather odd design( another Paignton special..) as the impressive thing about giraffes is looking UP to see their great height. Oh well....

They received an outpouring of public and media sympathy when the giraffes died. I can't imagine a repeat of that if they let it happen again.
Yes, you do look down on them in the house and, funnily enough, I heard a similar comment to Pertinax's there yesterday.

I'm sure they have every precaution in place to ever prevent that happening again.

Regarding looking down on the Giraffes, I don't know any other UK zoo with that design in their indoor house- though there may be in Europe. Its okay but they are such amazing creatures to see closeup from ground level and so graceful in their movements too. You can see I've always loved giraffes...

Actually Colchester Zoo have an indoor viewing area that is directly above the giraffe, rhino, zebra and kudu enclosures as well as ground level outdoor viewing areas, just like Paignton

I did think they were both from the Czech Republic but was told otherwise yesterday. (My source will remain known only to me.) I'll await the press release for confirmation.
