Thank you very much for your kind offer of mandrills for my birthday present Pertinax. Unfortunately I am sorry to advise you that I must turn down your extrememly generous donation, I have nowhere to keep them. Still, it is the thought that counts. Besides the neighbours would think I was keeping gorillas, and then I would have a visit from the council gestapo.

Ok, I know what you mean. I'll find out where Chester got their new mandrills from if it kills me. If I visit before Adopter's Day (which is unlikely), I will have to stand outside the keepers' office from dawn till dusk. It seems to be the only chance of getting hold of a keeper.

Why can't you take an interest in something from the carnivore or giraffe sections? Their keepers are easy to find.

I would like to thank everyone for their kind birthday messages.

It was totally unexpected and very much appreciated.

I can give you a birthday present by putting you out of your misery. The mandrills came from Colchester - it's on the Colchester website
Now you'll be able to enjoy Adopter's Day properly

Great!. I've looked on there before but not seen anything. I thought that they must have- its the only Uk collection that has enough to spare several females like that. They'll be related to the original two females(also from Colchester) Now the interesting thing is the Chester keeper told me the adult male came 'from Ravensden'- the dealer, and it seemed as if they don't have any other details on his background. It is just possible he could have gone there from Southport- in which case he'd be related to all the females! However, I think Ravensden get animals from Europe too- so he's just as likely to have come from elsewhere and be totally unrelated- we will never know.
