Sad news but why aren't Hen Harriers kept in OUR large allegedly UK wildlife supporting zoo's for breeding and then releasing back into the wild?

Probably because they aren't endangered globally-they are listed as Least Concern by IUCN as they have quite a wide distribution and they don't really need reintroducing here. There is an OK breeding population in Scotland and the birds are quite mobile-if allowed to breed in England without persecution they do so as they have (sort of) done this year-the English breeding population could recover fairly quickly without reintroduction. The problem is stopping the persecution that prevents successful breeding/kills adult birds at wintering roosts and reintroduction doesn't fix this sadly.
