What hornbills are ther in UK zoos? How many per zoo? And what the enclosures and breeding records like?

First Chester:

Wrinkled hornbill 1.1 in a reasonably sized aviary on the ground floor of the tropical realm. They were bred in 1995 which was a first for the UK. The male of that pair has since died, and a new male has been acquired. At the moment the male and female are living separately.

Writhed hornbill 1.1 in a reasonably sized aviary on the ground floor of the tropical realm. They have not bred yet and the male and female are living together.

We need some sulawesi wrinkled hornbills over here. They are goregeous.

One point, Chester now only has 1.1.1 Javan rhinoceras hornbills registered with ISIS. Did one of the original chicks die.

Lotherton that houses the Southern Ground, Silvery-Cheeked and Trumpeter is a small but rapidly improving collection. I last went a couple of years ago and they had built a huge mixed species walk through with an African Savannah theme containing Crowned Crane, Sacred Ibis, Night Heron and I'm sure it had some sort of small Tockus Hornbill (maybe yellow billed?) I don't remember the Trumpeter Hornbills either but they were in the stages of implementing their masteplan so clearly has a rapidly changing collection. Has one of the best Condor facilities I've ever seen.

I've remembered where I saw Rhinoceros Hornbills a place called Paulton's Park in Hampshire( the other side of Winchester from Marwell) Its really a childrens' amusement park but it did have an extensive and well housed collection of birds including Parrots, Hornbills, ratites etc. This was about 15 years ago tho' its still advertised on TV but I don't know if they still have the Bird Collection (or the Hornbills....). They also had deer, alpaca,llamas etc.

I think they've still got a good bird collection. Apparently Paulton's Park is the only UK collection that charges admission to professional keepers from other zoos.

They seem to be first and foremost an amusement park.

The Paulton's Park staff have always been very friendly and helpful to us < Zoo History >. I would suggest contacting the keeping staff by email or phone prior to visiting. The collection is certainly worth a visit.

In 2006 Cricket St Thomas hatched 1.1 southern ground hornbills, the male chick was parent reared which is believed to be a UK first. He will be staying at the park while his three sisters are to be sent to other UK zoos so that new pairs can be established.

Yes I think Paulton's and Birdworld both hold important hornbill species but don't list them on ISIS.

That's 1.3(unless 2 were hatched in the next year)...also didn't the male chick have to be euthanased later because of a deformed leg?

You could be right. The source of my information (Avicultural Magazine) was quoting from an article published in November 2007.

For what it's worth ISIS shows 3.2.1, so if the above is true they would be left with 3.0 and that is assuming the unsexed chick is a female.

Also my date of 2006 ought to have been 2007. Sorry!
