Has anyone got some pictures of the Jaguar cage at Marwell, and maby some pictures of there enclosure at chester

yes there are quite a few in the chester zoo album

and i cant see any of the old marwell ones

Why did Marwell decide to get rid of their jaguars in the first place? Where they all old animals. I know they went to Chester, but there are no plans to breed from them I was told

From what I remember they are over represented and therefore that was the reason they were no longer going to breed from them.

They went to Chester because they were redeveloping and didn't have room to house them anymore. And at the time chester had a pretty empty Jaguar enclosure besides the breeding pair.

Its interesting that the Jaguar cage at Marwell was dismantled and there is nothing there at all now- just a grass slope.

Someone asked about the cage- it was timber framed, wire mesh, just like the old Leopard enclosure. There were two outside cages and a standard Marwell cat-design indoor house. It was situated on the first bend in the road, opposite the Cheetah 'hollow'.

yes funny that taun quotes "didn't have room to house them anymore" they would have been okay keeping them as they were.

When i last saw the jaguar cage about 12 months before the animals arrived at Chester i thought it was about to fall down.

Yes, the timbers were almost rotten and the mesh very old too. I think they just decided to concentrate on the Leopards and instead of yet another expensive building project, to dispense with Jaguars.

I also believe that Zoo Inspectors condemned the old-style dens used for the Big Cats as being inadequate - the Tiger House was rebuilt soon after . The only old-style dens now are the old Cheetah House , I think servals were in there on my last visit , as they are smaller I guess there is not a problem .

The old dens were based on circus beast waggons and tigers , leopards and jaguars all seemed to thrive and breed well in them at Marwell .

yes bele that is where the servals are now, where do the cheetahs sleep at night anyone?

The Servals are in the two enclosures next to each other between the Warthogs and Cheetahs.

The cheetahs have several dens in their enclosure where the male and oldest female are.

The two female offspring are off-show and I do not know what housing they have -but they do have access to a paddock. They are not in the stable yard, but behind the female Okapi housing / Nyala housing.
