Jitu is off to Spain
Old 27-09-2008

The zoo have revealed that Jitu is off to join a bachelor group at a zoo in Spain. The reason for this, as many members on here have believed for a while, is that he's sterile. he's being replaced by a younger male from a zoo in Austria

That's excellent news!! Poor old Jitu though, he certainly looked the part, but with three females failing to conceive this move was inevitable...

Lets hope the new male can do the business!!

This new almost silverback Bukava ex Austria (the bachelor troupe at Schmiding Zoo I believe ....), ...... what is his genetic background (sirexdam, origin zoo)?

This is good news. Jitu has had every opportunity.

Gorillas Galore says that Bukavu was born at Munich on 24th July 1997 and mother reared.
Sire: Roututu (wild-born)
Dam: Bagira (from Krefeld, Massa x Boma)

Doubtless Pertinax knows more personal details.

I think Blackpool have been trying to move 'Jitu' out for several years now but there's been problems about rehoming him. Still, at last its happening.

With the new young mother-reared 'Bukavu'(when he arrives) and three good females, Blackpool are now, hopefully, in a strong position for breeding.

Funnily enough I just mentioned this news in my PM to you...

Details are correct, I can only add 'Bukavu' has been in the Schmiding group four years (since 2004)

This move is VERY good news and well overdue though like others I'm also sorry to see Jitu go. The last time I went to Blackpool (I've only ever been twice) I was chatting to the keeper by the glass wall outdoors and Jitu hurled a thick branch at it- the force was such I thought he must have cracked it, but no...

Perhaps the other zoo mentioned should become a batchelor male holding facility and send their females to Paignton, swap their roles.

Yep so it will not happen then like so many other good ideas, pity because then at least they would be doing something usefull for the Gorilla population in zoos.
