Lion tailed Macaques UK/Bristol
Old 29-08-2008

Bele- that's interesting info about the origin of the Bristol Lion-tailed Macaques. Do you know when they first arrived at Bristol- it seems intitially one pair came from Thorney, and the other from Twycross? I remember that each pair was kept seperate(but adjacent) at the cafe end of the old(1930's) monkey house.

Some years ago I traced the ancestry of a number of the Lion tails at Bristol/colchester/Dublin and there is a lot of inter-relationship in the groups e.g. Colchester's initial females were born at Bristol. I will try and find it again.

I have a studbook for 1991 , the following comes from this source .

The Thorney animals were male George arrived Thorney 1969 to Bristol 6 March 1979 with his daughter Stumpy born 1976 ( she was at Chester between December 1982 and October 1983 - during building of 'old' new Monkey House at Bristol perhaps ) and son Donas born 1977 .

George moved to Chester December 1982 , Dublin February 1985 , Chester July 1986 and Belfast January 1990 .

Donas went to Ravensden December 1982 , London RP January 1983 , Chester July 1984 , Dublin October 1987 , Edinburgh August 1989 .

Stumpy stayed at Bristol with female Eva born Dresden 1980 and male Paddy born Dublin 1981 . I don't know when she died .

I haven't found my family tree yet. From memory I thought that 'Donas' was born at Chester, the only offspring of Lennie x Flo? I believe he ended up as one of a pair (+ female Dileas) at Chessington (but later they and their single Chessington offspring Alby were exported to S. Africa.)

'Stumpy' was the mother of a number of babies at Bristol, including Toyah(handraised) and probably also two females which went to Colchester(their initial breeders) and also I think Bristol's two current breeding females Kila & Casey(they are sisters) 'Stumpy' lived on in the current Bristol group until only a few years ago when she finally died.

It was Dillon who was born at Chester in January 1978 , he went to Bristol October 1983 , back to Chester October 1985 then to Dublin July 1986 .

I did not think Stumpy had died long ago , it would be very interesting to see the family tree of her offspring .

I found it... its very complicated.

Stumpy's offspring(the ones I know about) were;
1. f.Toyah (father George, inbreeding) born Bristol- handraised
2. f. Assam (father George- inbreeding) born at Chester.
3. m Ike (father Adolf or Dillon)) born Bristol, later sent to Chester.

Toyah and Assam were sent to Colchester Zoo, along with a third female Jessica(Assam x Ike, brother & sister) who was Stumpy's granddaughter on both sides.

the two current breeding females in Bristol's group are NOT Stumpy's, but both are Eva's. They are half sisters Kila(father Ike) & Casey(father Paddy-from Dublin.) so Kila is Stumpy's granddaughter, but Casey is not related to her.

Stumpy was definately the oldest Liontailed Macaque in Uk when she died.

The pair at Chessington were male Dillon(born Chester) and female Alba (born Edinburgh- Donas x Dileas.) Their only offspring at Chessington was a male Dougal. these three were exported to S.A.

Chester- the two original females in the current group are one from Colchester(Tina) and one from Edinburgh(Reme-Donas x Dileas) so I think through Tina that Stumpy's genes are in the Chester group as well.

Are the Howletts group related too? I know nothing about them, except that the male is called Spock (I heard the keeper's talk when I was there a couple of weeks ago).

nope. They came as a group of 9 or 10 from 'a private collection in Germany'. I know no more than that but presume they stem from European animals.
