Orangutans at Monkeyworld.
Old 17-08-2008

... to continue about MonkeyWorld's orangutans...

If they now have two permanent groups, will they be building a new outdoor enclosure, or dividing the existing one. Presumably they won't want to have one lot indoors during daytime longterm?

I believe there were plans at one time to build another new orangutan complex but I don't know what the latest news is on this. At least they rotate the groups - there are orangutans in a zoo not a million miles from me who haven't been outside for months!

How come? Is that because of the moat/security problems or because of trying to socialise them together?

for this thread i think i should be zoo informant, there are plans to build another orangutan enclosure down by the new gibbon woods, this has been all put on hold after jims death but i expect it will be built by the end of next year, as it is a much needed complex, there are also MAJOR plans to build another chimp area, as the zoo can no longer take in anymore, i think the collection numbers more than 60 now.

Reply to Pertinax:
Choose any combination of the following reasons:
Bulu wasn't well enough to go outside this year so Gambira didn't go out.
Demo and Mali were in quarantine till May, and...
They will need constant supervision when they first go out.
They are all being gradually socialised.
The piece de resistance - the sporadic building work for the gibbon access taking place during the summer
Chinta, who has been outside, isn't let out onto the smaller island because she can somehow climb over the the fence separating the bridges to the islands........
