    Hi guys,
Can anyone enlighten me on the current "pecking order" in the 3 main Chimp groups.

I know a while back Pacco was making a bit of a stand in the Batchelor group.

The last I knew it was:

    Paddy
    Busta

    Hananya
    Tikko

    Butch
    Buxom & Jestah

I think if they had survived Alberto would have been a potential group leader and even at such a young age Bob was showing potential too. I really liked Bob, so sad.

    Thanks all,

    STA

Pasco got well and truly put in his place by the whole group so Buch's place is secure as much as any alphas place I secure. I believe Pack is a more settled chimp now

I know this is going off thread but did they not try and get Paddy's and Rodney's group together at one time . It seemed to go relatively well but what happened in the end ?

I didn't even know they had done that so must have not worked out, it would produce a very large group

It wasn't Hananya's group (previously headed up by Rodney) that was merged with Paddy's current group, it was two previous groups. Rodney was subsequently moved out of the merged group and put into the new group with the younger chimps, what is now Hananya's, I think when things didn't work out with Spanish Charlie leading the group of youngsters. The chimps that were in Rodney and Paddy's merged groups are now mainly in Paddy's. Not sure about Cherri and Peggy, how they ended up with Hananya.

    It's 'Paco'!

Peggy was on a group with Mojo, Mona and Chatta at that time. According to an old ARC, Cherri was moved out of Paddy's group (the merged group) when she fell pregnant with Seamus as the thought she'd have an easier time as she wouldn't be as low in the pecking order.

There are 4/5 big adult females in with Hanaya so i think most of Rodneys group stayed together in the end. Rodney never took over the nurserey group.

As I already stated - two previous groups headed by Paddy and Rodney merged. That merged group forms the bulk of Paddy's group.

Rodney DID then take over the nursery group, or at least the group of chimps graduating from the nursery. All the chimps from that 'nursery' group are now in Hananya's group including Hananya, Tikko, Semach, Simon, Trudy, Arfur, Jess, Honey, Tutti, the Dutch lab girls. They were all, back then, in the nursery, it's just that it is so long ago that they've all now grown up!

Actually not quite all of them, Gypsy got moved to the Bachelors at some point.

Probably one of the biggest females is Johni who was born in 1999 and is towards the younger end of the any range in the group.

I'm not sure on the current bachelor group situation, but I'm sure I heard somewhere that Butch and Jestah are now pretty much on equal footing.

Following Tikko's passing, it doesn't sound like anyone has taken a strong 'second in charge role', but Simon is the next highest ranking male.

Busta is still second to Paddy, while Gamba is the third ranked male. Bart has been pushing his boundaries recently, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up high in rank.

All the males bar Paddy, Paco, Hananya, Ben, Bryan and Bart have been castrated. It's not something I personally agree with, but the reasoning behind it as they are in captivity and so have limited opportunities to get away from male aggression. Of course, they are still chimpanzees and fights still happen.

Initially everyone wanted Paddy and Rodney to run the group together. The reason they were put together in the first place was that Rodney was struggling to control the adult females in his own group so they wanted Paddy who seemed better in leadership and the two groups (Rodney's 16 and Paddy's 7) were merged and after some squabbling of course the two big males seemed to have formed an alliance to have joint leadership. The following year, '98, the females chose the younger and fitter Paddy over old timer Rodney, who was then moved to what was initially known as Charlie's group now Hananya's community. With him went Cherri who was pregnant (Seamus) also from the merged group ruled by Paddy.
