Thankyou. I'm hoping to hear he'll depart very soon now but sudden changes of plan don't surprise me anymore...

At last, the black rhino EEP is moving again .. to somewhere beautiful! I will post my news clippings shortly in the European rhino thread.

Paignton Zoo Lions and Tigers
Old 29-04-2008

How are things with the Asiatic Lions at Paignton. They received a new breeding male about 2 years ago from Twycross Zoo, are the pair together and mating yet, or are they both not mature enough for breeding?

Also, are the tiger family all together yet or is the male still seperate from the mum and cub?

Lions and tigers

The lions have been together since the male's arrival and look relaxed together. I was talking to another zoo visitor last week who told me he'd seen the male looking interested in the lioness but she hadn't responded. Previously, she'd shown interest in him and he hadn't responded!
The male tiger is still separated from mum and daughter.

Lions- Am I correct in thinking one of them(the female?) was born at Paignton in the last litter of the previous pair? Was the male born at Twycross?

Yes - I can't remember her name at the moment. He's Mwambe - he had to be kept by himself at Twycross for a while before coming here.

Do you know where the original male 'Midas' was sent to after they lost his mate? I believe it was somewhere abroad.

I think Midas went to Moscow Zoo. He must be getting on a bit now, if he is still alive?

MIdas went to Moscow Zoo. He was born in 1993.
Damisi is still here. They haven't been told anything about a move yet.
The Red Crowned Cranes have hatched a chick.
Giraffes Two females are ready to leave Poland but they have to find a way round the Blue Tongue zones as they obviously have nowhere to keep them in quarantine. All these quarantine laws make you wonder if zoos are going to end up with more animals off show than on show!

Gigit. Are the other four Gorillas- Pertinax, Kumbuka and the two small ones, living as a group? You mentioned before they will receive two more small ones once Mapema & Damisi were gone- so I guess apart from Damisi having to be alone, they can't bring any more in until he is gone... I can't see any reason for a continued hold up now if Chessington have fulfilled their side of the 'deal' (which seems to be what it was- let a female go or you can't have this new male...)

... none. They lost the last pair(+ a week old calf) in a fire and have since had one new bull. They have been awaiting females to join him for a long time now.

Gigit- How long is it since they received the bull giraffe? Has he a name?

GorillasYes, Damisi is alone and the others live as a group. I think Crocodile Swamp has priority over everything else at the moment and once it's open they'll be able to think about Damisi etc. Fingers crossed!
Giraffe Yoda arrived in September 2006. He was born in Givskud Zoo in Denmark on 14 November 2004.
