They definately had Wisent- in the paddock occupied by the Siatunga- I have a postcard of them too. I'm also equally sure they've never had American Bison there.

Just found out a female Hartmann was sent by Marwell a few weeks ago. This leaves Marwell with 3 females - but I am unsure which female went to Paignton so can't give any more info on her.

Red River Hogs

Is the female Red River Hog still alone? (That's not good for a social species...)

I saw two well grown male offspring with the breeding pair at London. Maybe one of them could be a future male for Paignton?

There's still only the one Red River Hog. I think I saw on Zoo Days that Colchester have several. You'd think there'd be a spare one for Paignton somewhere!

there are Red River hogs breeding in several UK zoos nowadays. e.g. London's breeding pair have two nearly full grown 'piglets' at present- BOTH males... I can't understand why Paignton haven't replaced their lost male yet- I have a feeling nobody is making an effort?

I haven't spoken to the appropriate keeper lately, but the arrival of new giraffes has been delayed by Blue Tongue so maybe that's why there are no new Hogs too.

yes, you could be right there. Its not like Paignton to have singleton animals unless they can't help it. Maybe you can find out if they are trying to pair her up again?

Can I just say it is pure stupidity that within the EU every bloody country has its own vet quarantine laws. These are used whenever we need to shift exotic species around the continent or to the UK. Huge load of paperwork, health checks, narcotisation of animals, mutiple blood samples, CITES import and export papers, IATA restrictions on animal transport before any transport can go forward. Coupled onto that how most individual country vet health authorities keep changing their rules every 2 months or so and you can imagine that an envisaged giraffe transport that needs to happen inside 2-3 months could in effect take 1-2 years.

Now if only they were cattle, sheep, pigs or anything from the agricultural industry and you do not need any of these items on your list to transport. Yet whenever some transmittable disease outbreak happens it is always in domestic stock. Too little care in isolating new animals, no quarantaine, no health checks (only when they fall sick, cause remember it is an economic activity we are talking about here), too little room between different farms and the list is sheer endless.

And - I should add - this is the European perspective on this.

Come to think of it: imagine if we want to confront all ills affecting our planet, like species extinctions, biodiversity loss, habitat encroachment, climate change, burgeoning human populations and natural resources usage and pollution, we need 10-50 billion EUROS each year. Now if only we would spent a little less on arms sales, we would already go a long way .....

And now for my question: If the giraffe are not coming in now, when are they coming?

Yes please. That poor little Hog has been on her own for a long time now(how long is it actually?) and like all pigs they are highly social creatures if you watch them at other zoos. London have two young males which will soon need rehoming, and Woburn S.P. have at least half a dozen in their group.

Several zoos- including nearly all the Safari Parks- in the UK now have groups of pure Rothschild's Giraffe- would it not have been easier for Paignton to obtain new females nearer to home?

Could anyone please tell me if paignton had a male black rhino or if they borrowed one to mate the female or AI etc. Or if this information is already in another thread then please point me in the right direction as i've had a look and can't find it. Thanks
