I've never been to Paignton but if I were to go, two species I would be very keen to see would be the Nine-Banded Armadillo and the Short-Beaked Echidna. Both very unusual and rarely kept in European zoos.

Freckled Ducks for a start. Other unusual birds are Carnaby's Black Cockatoos, Grey Gulls and Green Oropendola.

I've never seen the echidna at Paignton in 5 visits.

There is a small group of large Aldabra Giant Tortoises. A good tortoise collection also.

The walk through lemur enclosure is good, apart from if you're on the rope bridge and children start to swing it.

In the Reptile House are Papuan Water Python and Yellow Anacondas.

Paignton used to be a very 'dated' zoo until about fifteen years ago when it suddenly 'woke up' and moved ahead in leaps and bounds. Its a very 'busy' zoo nowadays. Set on two hillsides with a valley floor between, its a pleasant site, lots of attractive trees etc and easy to get around as its not an enormous area,- about the same size as Dudley or Edinburgh.

The Orangutans are Bornean- originally from London Zoo. You will see 'Bulu' who is now the oldest orangutan in UK- though she is often asleep under a pile of woodwool. Please can you note if there is a new male Orangutan, to replace 'Nakal' (Bulu's son) who was sent away some time ago now.?
