I know it's going off topic but the off show chimp area in Chester is brilliant. There are so many individual holding compounds and although it's relativly old it is still one of the best facilities in the country.
Does the Clore rainforest lookout have any Black lion or Pied tamarins? They have them at Chester and Jersey and they are very rare in zoos.

Someone mentioned which chimp was the oldest at Chester but I can't find the right thread. The oldest male is Boris who arrived in 1966 and the oldest female is Cleo who arrived in 1971.

The dominant pair are Dylan (born 9 April 1987) and Cleo.

    Chester chimps.

Yes, Boris was wildcaught, not born at Chester, as mentioned above, so was Cleo- who came from London Zoo.

There are actually five(?) adult males- Boris, and the four others all born at Chester- Wilson, Nicky, Friday & Dylan(who is Friday's son) unless one or other of them have died.

Other males in the long distant past at CHester were; Bolden, Bimbo & Prince, also Kongola(who looked like a Gorilla and was thought to be a 'Choga' chimpanzee.) They also had a male called 'Elmer' at one time, he was a particularly large male.

Most of the chimps that were born in the zoo seem to have been fathered by either Bolden, Boris or Friday but paternity is difficult to prove when several males are living together..

I have a very detailed profile of all the chimps. I'll post it gradually when I have time.

Boris is the oldest Chimp and led the gropu for more than a decade, before Dylan bacame dominant in 2003. He has a pale-ish face and grey on his lower back, which is curved: He also has a nick in his right ear. Boris identifies the most with people and will often try to interact with them through the glass. Boris has a typical pose, with arems folded looking very thoughtful. He often displays and will jump up at people behind the glass, and may throw objects.

Wilson is the smallest adult male. He has a black face and thick black hair, which sticks up on his head. Wilson is often seen rocking when he is not interacting socially, and is usually persiaitantly following a femlae with a full oestrus swelling.

Nicky is a large male, who is grey all over with bare patches. He has a white beard, a wide face and a very straight back. Usually found resting on his own, he likes the quiet life and gets easily upset by the diplaying of others.

Friday is a robust male with bald aims and many battle scars. He has a pale face and walks rather stiffly, with straight legs. Friday also has a slight 'punk' hairstyle, but to a lesser extent than wilson. He normally holds his index finger of his right hand straight out.

Dylan is the youngest adult male but is also the most muscular. He has a very pale face witha darker patch around the nose and brown skin under a smooth coat. Dylan has a posture like Boris and walks witha swagger. He also has a similar nick in his ear. Recently becoming the dominat male, he is shown a lot of respect and tends to bully the others.

These are the 5 oldest males, I'll post more When I have time.

There is a sign near the exit to the chimp house detailing all the current chimps and their dates of birth. There is a plan of the chimp house along the eastern side of the enclosure near to the Macaws aviary.

    Some more......

Kate is the oldest female and spends a lot of time on her own. She is large, with rolls of fat round her legs and is rather knock kneed. Kate has a dark face with a mottled white chin and white beard, and also has a "Punk" hairstlye. She has a rather saggy bottom, which gets only slightly bigger when she is in oestrus. Kate is often outside with her daughter, grandchildren and great grandson.

Cleo is a very large female with a permenantly large bottom. She has silver hair on the bottom half of her back and doom on her legs, and grey hair around her face. As the dominant female she is aggressive and often displays at the other females; although she acts as aunts to a few of the youngsters.

Heidi is a short and stout female with a very dark face, white beard and very light eyes. She is often seen watching the public at the edge of the island, nodding at those she takes a liking to. She has an infant, Rhiannon, born in October 2004.

Rosie is a quiet low ranking, slight female with a rounded back and a scarred bottom lip. She has fairly thick black hair, with a protruding black face and ears that fold forewards in front of tufts of hair. Rosie is often resting agaisnt a wall or grooming with her 2 daughter.

Halfpenny is a slim, but muscular, female with a long black face and a tuft of hair at the back of her head. She is balding on her head and shoulders, and has a bald patch on each shoulder blade. She has a disabled daughter who she is often near.

I don't know that. When I get further on, there are the youngsters, and it mentions their parents. The youngsters born after 2003 are Dylan's while the ones before are most likely going to be Boris's.

I think the fathers are not always known. Chester have been asked to concentrate on breeding pure Western Chimpanzees, but how can they phase out the hybrids without disrupting a very successful colony?

Same with the elephants, Sheba is a completly different sub species to the rest. And the others are slightly separted taxonomically. If that's a word!!!

Farthing is slim with a long straight back, a protruding dark face, and rather pointed ears. She has a very prominant brow and looks as though she is frowning. Farthing's index finger on her left hand is small, without joints, and always sticks out. She is not social and spends a lot of time on her own or with her daughter.

Mandy is a dainty female with light brown hairs on her lower back. She has a dark face and often sticks out her tongue. Mandy is a playful female and often blows rasberries with her lips and claps her hands for attention.

Kan kan is a slim female with a straight back. She has a dark face with a white beard, a slightly jutting lower jaw and thin hair on top. She is usually outside with only her family, although she has gained admirers since having a baby in 2003.

Sarah is a fairly dumpy female with a long dark face. She has a light freckled chest. She is very social and is often grooming. Sarah also blows rasberries loudly, usually when she is grooming.

Sally has a completly bald head and light skin with blotchy dark patches, which gives the inpresson that she is weraing snadals. She is also quite fluffy; especially around the head and spends a lot of time outside. Sally still has a low status and usualyy socialises only with her family. She is a caring female, showing concern when others are hurt, and spends a lot of time close to the babies in the group.

Layla is fairly small with a rounded neck. She has very light skin and her face is similar to Dylan, with a darker patch around the nose.

Alice is a slim, completley black, female. She has a very dark face and looks very similar to halfpenny. Alice has an infant, Frankie born in 2004.

Whitney is a very slim female with bald patches in places. She has pale brown skin and has a scar on her upper lip. Whitney still spends a lot of time with Kan Kan. She has an infant, Carlos, born in March 2005.

Zee zee is slim with black hair and pale skin: She has a symettrical face and is widely considered to be the prettiest chimp. She is often seen with Cleo. Her Infant Dido was born in December 2004.

Lizzie has pale skin and is rather patchy in places. She has a wrinkley 'scrunched up' face and gets a rather large oestrus swelling. Lizzie's baby, Donna, was born in May 2004.

I believe the number of chimps is still 30, Chester have no plans to breed from the chimps for a few years
