zoogiraffe, how long do you think we will have to wait before the zoo makes an announcement on the new species?

Not sure but hopefully sometime in 2009.

Perhaps this explains the Prevost's dissapearance.
I believe a male Prevost's Squirrel goes to Tropiquaria Wildlife Park and join the female group.

i know you guys are all fans of chester zoo and im sure its great. but ive looked at zillions of photos, and even though i know you shouldnt judge something until youve been....but talking specifically about the exhibits. not one of them has yet jumped out and grabbed me as being realy good or really innovative. is this the case or are they just bad photos.

I agree with you to a certain degree. There is quite a few enclosures at chester that while adequate to house the species they do, are not very appealing to look at.

All of Chester’s later developments are all really impressive.

Chester has such a diverse collection, (a lot of which is helped by the size of the place) which makes the zoo impressive.

pretty fair point I guess if you judge from photos, but there are a number of great exhibits that perhaps do not come off as well as they do in person.

Realm of the Red Ape
Twilight Zone
Penguin Pool - great setup for breeding in particular
Chimpanzee island - the heaviest planted ape enclosure that i've seen, (no hot wire!)
Condor Cliffs and Europe on the Edge are great aviaries
Monkey Islands
Elephant House
Spirit of the Jaguar

As Taun said, most of the new exhibits have been very good and with the new expansion, most of the zoo will probably be upgraded even further.

I think what makes Chester so popular is the overall standard of the exhibits and diversity of collection. I can't say that there is a 'bad' enclosure at Chester...

Its true. Though there is no one exhibit that is truly outstanding, but several(as listed above) are modern and well designed. This, coupled with the very large and diverse collection and the permanent 'go ahead' feel that emanates from the Zoo is what has kept Chester ahead of the rest of the UK field. In my opinion -and many others here- it has always ranked as the UK's best zoo by quite a wide margin.

I can't quite agree. The paddock next to the spectacled bears with the capybara, tapir and vicuna flies in the face of zoogeography, provides rotten viewing and is so overstocked that it is muddy for most of the year. It wasn't too bad for the capybara and tapirs, which it held originally: but the vicuna deserve something better.
The other one I hate is the old tuatara house, which houses the Mallorcan midwife toads. It's not very attractive, but the toads seem to do well. The problem is that you can never see a thing and there is always a large puddle in front of the window, so you can't even crouch or kneel to get a better view

Dik-Dik were planned to be housed with the okapis 2 years ago. Maybe that is where they are going.
