I never visited Southport Zoo but it sounds like the site was really very unsuitable for a zoo- and if it was to ever re-open a larger, more suitable site should be located. But in my opinion its better to leave zoos in the hands of bigger, wealthier organisations(like Chester) anyway. The days of 'tinpot' zoos in the Uk should be over now.

I believe the Petries, who ran Southport moved to Yorkshire and there was talk of them opening a falconry centre. Anyone?

Yes i heard that, but apparently something went wrong there as well and i don't think they could get a license to open, don't quote me on that though as i read about it a while ago and i can't remember where. I think people like them should never be allowed to keep animals again

They did move to a falconry centre and are still running it as a falconry centre they applied to have a zoo licence for the site but were turned down.

thanks hornbill. Not bad pictures- I imagine that's the male they got from America(they imported 2.2 to add new blood to the group-he is dead now but his son is the breeding male at Trotters World of Animals)

Despite the fairly basic housing, Southport were quite famous for their Mandrills, they bred loads of them over the years- all starting with a single pair they(accidentally I think) obtained from a dealer...

Yes, I am very interested in this. Thanks for listing them.

You don't happen to know which ones went to Trotters and which to Heythrop do you. I believe the male 'Charlie'(son of Mica?) is at Trotters along with females which may have come from the larger (original) group but have no other details.

have to bare with me. just trying to compare my orininal notes with those on isis.

your assumption however about charlie being placed with the females from the other group is correct.

Apparently Markus was sent to Colchester zoo (according to ISIS.)

at present i have
Della
Millie
Tofu
Charlie

Unknown Female date of birth 14/06/02 Sire = Markus. Dam = Tofu
Unknown Male date of birth 28/09/03 Sire = Markus. Dam = Tofu.

Still looking for the ohthers on my original paperwork.

The female mandrill hand-reared at Cefn-yr-Erw was born at Southport shortly before the collection was split up , she arrived there with the gibbons , old spider monkeys and possibly ruffed lemurs .

Thanks. Unfortunately I can't access the more detailed ISIS information. It would be excellent to know exactly which animals from Southport went to Trotters & which ones went to Heythrop.

I think there must be a mistake here. Are you certain you got millie as I dont think you have?. I have looked back at trotters using the in depth isis and they have only southport mandrill with the birthdate of 14/11/2000

Baring in mind that the notes I originally have with these dates of births on were written in 2001 by me using Southport zoos record cards. and there was only one born on 14/11/2000

Trotters also list six more mandrills. 5 apparently appeared on 1st January 2006 and one in march 07.

I was unable to find out about the rest, but between you guys and some earlier posts here it seems as though the unacounted ones went to heythorp.

I must point out though that I left in 2001 so do not know how many were around when they were finally moved off.

Nope, 2 of the Mandrills are called Kalvin and Millie, the others are Cookie, Xena and Molly. It can't be a coincidence lol

One of the things I am finding to my dislike more and more often on this forum is statements of fact from people who clearly don't know. I will try and type what, I think, I can remember. This was 5 years ago.

1.3 Mandrills arrived as a group from Southport at Heythrop. The male being Kelvin. Miki and Mich being two of the females and another much younger one (cant remember name) who was very strongly bonded to the one of the older two.

On the day of arrival or shortly after the then girlfriend of the person who fed and cleaned them came round with friends and between them gave names. Cookie & Molly? and something else. Cookie Im pretty sure being the name given to the young female.

Before the 1.3 arrived there was 2.2 Skip (dom. male) Xena and Millie, and seperated male Jackson.

I could possibly have my Millies and Mollys mixed up. Anyway only Kelvin retained his original Southport name.

Mandrills at Heythrop & Trotters.
Old 04-12-2008

Its certainly confusing....

Do you know where the previous 2.2. Mandrills at Heythrop originated from and are any of those still present now?

It seems Heythrop received 1.3 of the 'American' line Mandrills from Southport including a daughter of one of the two other females(probably Miki's) Miki is the only survivor of the 2.2 they imported from American zoos,(Mica, Miki, Bill, Opal) the others were born from these.
I would like to know exactly which ones Heythrop still have if anyone knows.
The name 'Millie' has possibly been used for more than one animal.

Trotters- I believe a number have been born there from the original Southport animals they received (Charlie(mica x miki) plus females from the original Southport group)- possibly this is the reason for the increase shown on ISIS?

Again, I would be interested if anyone can confirm exactly which the founder animals at Trotters were.
