Sumatran orang utan born!
Old 01-03-2008

Great news, check the Chester Zoo website! Emma (sumatran orang utan) gave birth to a healthy baby. The keepers didn`t know she was pregnant.

Wow! That was out of the blue!

Great news though, and lets hope there's a Bornian birth before too long.

Good news for the first year of Realm of the Red Ape! The Sumatran breeding group seems stable and reproducing.

Why though is not the Bornean group in good shape breeding wise? Any elaboration from our Chester watchdog team?

Jelle, Chester spent most of last year without a Bornean male. He has only came out of quarantine in the last few months. Sibu (another bornean male) is also returning, but his breeding potential is questionable...

Breeding of Bornean Orang Utans was purposely halted while ROTRA was under construction. Now that it is finished and there are two males, I'm sure it will not be long before baby Borneans can be seen. Don't know if the gibbons are a breeding pair though. Does anyone else?

THe gibbons are a breeding pair and there two youngsters! Its possible there could be more gibbon babies. Plus the added option of having the youngsters grown up in the presense of orangutans will be good for the future.

I think the breeding was stopped because the end of the old house which is closest to RoRA used to be the Bornean indoor quarters. I guess the zoo thought that the noise from the large construction would frighten the mothers or babies... (just a hypothesis mind you, I'm not sure of the exact reason)

As for gibbons, I'd love to see some baby Lars!

Another thing, on my last few visits I've noticed that the gibbons and orangs seem to have been kept seperate. (Gibbons in the last indoor area, Orangs in the middle one, nothing in the first one) Any reason for this seperation, or have I just seen them at bad times?

I have only seen them together! Our you sure they were seperated? Because that place has so many corridors you could get lost in it!

The first area as been closed off to see if they can get the planting to withstand the orangutan destructive nature. I hope they suceed because it looks great with itall plant up. Although i suppose it provides additional enrichement for them

No they were definately seperated. The gibbons seemed to have access to the outside area closest to the aquarium and the Orangs had access to the outdoor area at the rear.

I may have just caught them just after feeding time though, as the keepers do seperate them due to the diets...
