Tapir enclosure

At drayton manor, i love this enclosure i would love to work with tapirs, did some work with them while on work ex.

A nice enclosure. I've seen apirs at many zoos, and I oved the enclosures at:
Blackbrook Chester Los Angeles San Diego ( Malayans ) Zurich Antwerp I also saw them at Lille zoo when I was on the French Exchange. They have a huge enclosure with about 10 species of animals, Alpaca, tapir, mara, capybara, rhea, lots of waterfowl. I have seen all four species of Tapir. They are one of my favourite animals. |

Twycross has two sp. i also know they have some off show that they were looking after before the zoo they where looking after them for shut down so got stuck with them, not sure which sp sorry

London, Twycross, Belfast and edinburgh. I think that's all of them.

Malayans are also kept at that new one in Kent called something like the Rare Species Conservation Centre. Also, do any of the Aspinall's hold them?

Port lypmne has malayans, and howlett's has a pair of malayans, and I beleive that they have a lowland mother and her year old son. Something like that.

RSCC - Home The first time I tried to find it I had no luck at all, and eventually accessed it through the BIAZA site. Strangely all the text was in Latin. I'm pretty good at translating scientific names, but whole paragraphs of Latin were unreadable to me. It was in English the last time I looked. |

I'll start a thread about tapirs. as it seems that we have some fans!!! If you are looking for a good website about tapirs then tapir gallery is your best bet. It has lot's of info about Tapirs and has pictures of youngsters born at Los Angeles zoo.

Hello. I have just registered on the site!
There are 2 malayans at Twycross - Madge and Colin (Colin arrived recently from Heidelberg). And there are 2 Brazilians, Zimba and Suki. They did have 3 other Brazilians, a male, female, and male baby in 2004 who were lodging from Southport Zoo when it closed down who weren't on show - I don't know what happened to them though ( I went there to study them for my tapir dissertation for college). My favourite tapir enclosure, of the ones i have seen is at Longleat. They have recently had a baby tapir born there(called Hugo!) Its a shame Blackbrook have got rid of their tapir - I liked that enclosure. From reading the post on Blackbrook, is it the Heythrop/ Amazing Animals that she went to? And where is this Rare Species Conservation place come from? Does anyone know where their tapirs they have came from? |

The best tapir enclosure in the UK is undoubtedly the complex at Port Lympne, originally intended for Sumatran Rhino, until their female died and the male was returned to Indonesia (he was mixed with Malayan tapir for some time until his departure). They hold 2.4 Malayan Tapirs, including a calf born last year, in large wooded paddocks.
The other malayan tapir in the UK are 1.1 at Belfast (breeding pair), 2.1 at Edinburgh (breeding pair with calf born this year, the female is the 2004 calf born in London zoo), 1.1 at Twycross, 1.1 at Sandwich in Kent (possibly from Howletts as the Howletts pair vanished around this time), and 1.1 at London Zoo. The tapir enclosure at London zoo is well-planted despite the small area, but since the birth of the calf in 2004, they have allowed public access to the indoor quarters again. The vast wooded banks below the clore pavillion could easily be fenced for these animals, it seems such a shame that more collections don't house them in the same way as port lympne. |
