My Mum sent me this rather worrying link from todays Independent...

Seems silly that they have stated that its only becasue they had injurires the acted?? So if they got on fine the enclosure would be still adequate??

Lol.
Maybe the people who issue the zoo licence were desperate for any excuse to make them change the enclosure...
It is a bit too small I guess.

Were as other zoos have had inadequate facilities for years and also holding more animal then it can meaning some having to stay inside crampt indoor facilities???? Seems odd to me but then I suppose they have different inspectors.

mappin isnt a bad idea,

maybe they could move the lions out and use the two enclosures together, would that be big enough?

I think the Lions are probably a huge draw though. If they were to use the Mappins for Tigers, then maybe the Lions could get the Tiger area as well.

£5 million buys a lot of tiger enclosure. I know the ZSL doesn't do things on the cheap, but I doubt if the new Siberian tiger enclosure at the HWP cost anything like that, although of course the situation is very different.
I doubt if they will want to move the lions away or even to somewhere else in the zoo. So they can either enlarge the current enclosure by incorporating some or all of the unused 'Display Lawn' between the tigers and the Casson building or build something new in the wooded areas on the north or south bank of the canal - in other words beside the Clore or on the opposite bank (which I think may be the best bet).
The current trend is to use the Sumatran tigers as the focus of a Sumatran display: I'm sure they won't have rhinos or orangs, but what other Sumatran species could they put beside the tigers - gibbons? peacock pheasants? perhaps even a hornbill or two?

I think its highly likely this exhibit will follow their current trend- as with Gorilla Kingdom- a lavish enclosure for the Tigers with a few smaller zone-related exhibits e.g. gibbons, Hornbills associated with it. I would really prefer to see the new 'Tigers of the Asian Rainforest'(my name ) built in an entirely new area- as you suggest the North bank area holds the best possibilities. I think its much better if they don't live near the sound & smell of the Lions as possibly this may cause considerable (though undetected) stress to nervous animals like Tigers (who knows it might be partially the cause of the lack of breeding?)

The Lions could then have an extended and renovated area incorporating their own and the existing Tiger enclosure- no doubt with attendant species e.g. Langurs & peafowl or parakeets perhaps- ' The Lions of India'

I don't believe either species will end up in the Mappin terrace area after its recent renovation as an Australian exhibit- I think that is at least a semi-permanent display.
