Tigers at Edinburgh
Old 27-09-2008

My wife and I were at Edinburgh this week, and were told that they are expecting a pair of Sumatran tigers in the next few weeks, though I don't know where from. Apparently, they always planned to get Sumatrans, which is why the enclosure is made to look like bamboo, which makes more sense than for Amur tigers. Also, one person told us that Mercedes will be going up to the HWP, whereas another person told us that nothing has been decided yet.

Great to hear it confirmed that Sumatrans are coming to Edinburgh, the enclosures for the tigers to me are not the best, a bit too voluminous for me, too much climbing opportunities for a mainly ground dwelling animal, and a mere paddling pool at the front of the main enclosure.
Would love to see the enclosure extended into what is now the Japanese serow enclosure behind the current tiger exhibit, a lovely wooded area, with an undulating landscape and plenty of room for a large pond too.

I think the current Tiger enclosure in Edinburgh looks more suited to Orangs than Tigers.
I hope they do move Mercedes, I think she'd be much happier at the Highland wildlife park.

the polar bear is going to HWP, but they need to raise gate revenue first. This doesn't mean that Edinburgh won't also house Polar bears.

Highland Wildlife park seems to be growing insanely fast at the moment!!

It's going to have to be some HUGE enclosure up there. Are they planning on breeding from Mercedes in the future? sorry if this has alreday been covered before.

Is she maybe too old?
I meant that, if they were to move Mercedes to HWP, that they should either obtain a breeding pair as well as her, or keep her there on her own until she dies and then obtain a breeding pair.
Either way, I want somewhere in the UK to start breeding them again!!

I was thinking about the sumatran tiger situation for the zoo, the pair could be Kepala from Chester (who is supposedly moving?) and the female born at Paignton who is due to move soon anyways?

Did edinburgh move on their remaining male lion cub? Are there plans to re-breed the adults?

Was at Edinburgh this weekend and Amur tigers have gone and enclosure is currently under rennovation awaiting the sumatrans.

Also some interesting small species present including Kirk's Dik-dik and North American Porcupine.

The Heidelberg Zoo/Germany has announced that the 2 sumatran tiger cubs born in 2007 8a male and a female) will be moved to Scotland soon - must be Edinburgh. It would make sense if the female moved to Chester later, the zoo won`t breed her with her full brother so one of them has to leave Edinburgh relatively soon.

Given that the London pair are incompatable, there could be various options for making up new UK pairs.

I think she should be left alone if she moves up to HWP, and then when she dies they should get a breeding pair.
I haven't visited HWP, but I imagine they'd build a massive enclosure, something like the one in Scandinavia (I forget the name of the park), which would be really suited to breeding Polar bears.
