Just has a look on the Twycross website 'news' section. No mention of the successful(?) AI procedure on elephant 'Norjahan' but maybe they don't want to publicise this too soon- however there's no news at all since June last year- surely they could update it more often or hasn't anything interesting happened since then?- it gets a poor vote from me...

okay, that's good news- would just like a slightly more regular update on what's going on so maybe we will get that in the future.

I have been to Twycross today and noted down the DOB of the older chimps. The oldest appears to be Coco (F) who was born in 1965 making her 43, Choppers logs in at 1970,Eve was born in 1971 and Noddy in 1972 with Kip and Tojo in 1976. ---- quite an OAP club!.
The female camel had to be euthanased last week. She had been ill for many months and was not responding to treatment . That leaves just one camel in the exhibit opposite the loan male lion.
Norjahan was tethered inside, whilst the remainder of the herd were in the outdoor enclosure. I wonder if her second scan was iminent - there were no staff nearby to ask.
Construction at the bottom end (by entrance ) looks chaotic with no hint of what it might eventually be. Again, no one in evidence to enquire from.

The new entrance, perhaps? (Although I thought construction started later this year...)

Sad news regarding the camel as well, I watched the old episode of 'The Zoo' on the ITV Central website and it was the one where she gave birth.

And since I haven't commented on it, fantastic news about the elephants! However I would still prefer a bull (and obviously, the neccessary quarters)

Is Coco the original chocolate chimp? I hadn't realised she was that old.

Eve was born at Bristol Zoo(Buttons x Elizabeth)- I think she was the last chimp at Bristol and was then relocated to Twycross.

Do Twycross still have Chocolate Chimps? I was reading an old guide book and they mentioned one in the 'animal personalities' section.

Yes: Coco, Jambo and Makwonde (I think from memory that is her name) are all chocolate colour though Makwonde's infant , approx 8 months old now, is black (father Benji).

Colchester produced a chocolate chimp too- born to two normal black chimps which had been related to Coco/Jambo etc at Twycross.

Did Jambo's coat ever grow again?- I remember him being treated for a hair disorder that made him totally bald at one time..

Twycross have 5 brown chimpanzees, Jambo, who is still bald, Coco the old girl, Mongo a young male, Genet a female and Mwekundu(who is the mother of the black baby called Tuli).

I was also at Twycross today, when I passed the elephant house it was closed, so I peered through the window and saw a elephant who must have been Norjahan was laying down in the house sedated surrounded by people and it looked as though they were scanning her.

Coco was purchased from an army camp in Senegal. She is now approx in her mid 40s. She is still going very strong.

I'm sure there used to be a Chocolate Chimp called Millie.

Does anyone know all the babies that Coco has had? I only know Jambo.

Apparently, the hyenas, if they get them, will be going in the brand new enclosure behind the elephants which will enclude Lions, (The current male apparently going to Bristol so they are getting 2 felmales from some where), Dholes and the Hyenas will go into the new 3 sepparated enclosures.
