What a wholly dysfunctional mess. I really hope the group has turned a corner now and the young animals continue to thrive.

Infection will come into play, depending on how long the fetus has been in. Operation to extract the dead calf out is extremly risky though,

You don't really notice it though as they normally exhibit three cows and the calves together in the main paddock and out in the grounds. Only when you know there are never the five females together does anything seem wrong. But sadly there are only two breeding females at present- until Karishma hopefully joins the list.

The ZSL have a confusing policy of a public name and a 'house' name, therefore:

Dilberta = Geetha (now deceased)
Emmett = Tundi (this was his name in Syracuse, not sure it is still used)
Aziza = Layang Layang (still used?)
Euan (public) = Toomai (house)
LeeLee (public) = Bets (house)

I'm not sure what the reasoning is behind this, but I guess it's something to do with avoiding confusion in the animals if the public shout out names.

Bets is named after the American elephant researcher Bets Rasmussen, and it may or may not be coincidence that the former director of Philadelphia Zoo was Bill Donaldson.

Nicknames seems to be very popular, perhaps the elephant responds better to commands?

I'd say that would be a good bet. Many places used to /still do use commands in Thai or other Asian languages so the elephants won't get confused by the (English-speaking) public calling things out.

I visited Woburn yesterday and was very impressed, particularly with the Kingdom of the Carnivores reserves. However, I have a couple of questions regarding the animals:

1) I only saw two tigers. Are these the two sisters? Is there still a male tiger at Woburn?

2) I only saw two bears. Are there still seven bears at Woburn?

I must say the huge pride of lions was a sight to behold. Fantastic!

Hey, actually, Im not anymore working at Woburn I left last september...sorry about that I think they still have 7 bears, but they're all the time sleeping somewhere, But thing is to ask the ranger in there, it always knows where to spot the bears.

Are they going to act as a batchelor holding collection or do they hope to acquire a few females if and when they become available?
