Yorkshire Wildlife Park New arrivals

Seems that spring is slowly creeping in to the air!
The new baby guanaco seems a confident and happy little thing. There also seemed to be a new addition to the Ankole cattle family. Anyone looking in on the yellow mongoose today would probably agree they seemed keen to add to their numbers soon as well! As for the new exhibits, the South American walk through is coming along well and looks as though it's still on course to open this month. Couldn't get round to see the raised walkway but there's definite progress on the giraffe / hoofstock house, and stories in the local press this week show that the tiger enclosure is coming along now. Sounds v exciting I can't wait to visit Yorkshire Wildlife Park again soon. My visit tomorrow had been both rained and flu-ed off

The flamingos are now out of the holding pen and taking advantage of the pond, getting honked at by the geese and completely ignoring them.
The sitatunga were out in the African Plains although spending quite a bit of time around their indoor quarters. The tiger house is making progress. The new ankole calf is male. Lots of the others are 'trying' to have babies

No, they are apparently hoping to get the woodland play area finished for half term and then the SA walkthrough will be the next to finished hopefully for Easter I think. It has made quite a lot of progress but you couldn't get down that way from by the RRH & I didn't try further down.

Seems they have another new Bactrian camel added to their ever growing collection. A rather large looking male who seemed to be enjoying his new surroundings.
The woodland play area is finished and was being enjoyed by plenty of the younger visitors today. It does look like the south american walkthrough will take longer than the rest of this month to complete, but it's coming along steadily. The tiger compound looks to be coming on very well though, and can't wait to be allowed round the wetlands area again to see how the raised walkway is coming along. The sitatunga are looking very settled now, but i still can't see the older male that was with them just after xmas, on the one occasion i saw them outside before they spent several weeks inside the stables. There just seems to be the one younger male now. On another note the place was pretty busy today, all bodes well for the coming busy season. By the time the tigers arrive around Easter it'll be packed! |

Woodland play area is a great addition. My son spent ages on there today. It looks as if it was only finished this week, but kids loved it and it fits well into the woodland setting.
My first visit for over a year and I was very impressed with the changes and the new displays. It really is going from strength to strength. My one gripe. Why oh why, with all the geographical considerations of the animal displays, do they still have the emu trotting around the Plains of Africa? An enclosure between the new play area and the rear of wallaby walkthrough would be an ideal home for it (maybe even get it a friend?) as it would provide a limited Australian themed area. Just a thought. Winter prices also make it great value for money this time of year. |

Vladimir, the Amur Tiger moves to new home On 24th Feb, Vladimir, our young male Amur tiger, was transferred to a new tiger facility at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. This move was recommended by the European breeding programme coordinator for Amur tigers, who is based at London Zoo. At almost 2 years old, Vlad was at the right age to be moved to another zoo as he was becoming more independent and a move at this time mirrors what would happen in the wild. His new companion will be a female from a Bulgarian zoo who will be arriving in Yorkshire shortly. Vlad’s move leaves us with his mother, Sasha, and two sisters, all of whom seem very relaxed about his departure. There is no intention to bring in another potential breeding male just yet as Sasha is past breeding age, and her daughters are not old enough.  Guess I know where I'll be going on Sunday even though I guess he'll be off show for a while - they won't miss an opportunity for a grand opening! |

Definitely very excited too, but i think he'll probably be off show for a while yet.
I was there on Saturday and although the actual building and security fencing immediately around it seemed pretty much complete, the enclosure was nowhere near done. There was barely more than the first posts in the ground. Great news though, can't wait until we get a look. |
